Esports: Weekly preview - Minor events to the fore

It is the calm before the storm in a number of Esports with major CS:GO events and regional League of Legend tournaments such as the LPL and LCK just over the horizon.

In the meantime, though, there are a handful of off-season events and minor regional competitions which can give a good indication of how the upcoming majors may unfold.

This week the likes of the League of Legends Weibo Cup, the VALORANT BEACON Open and the Rainbow Six Premier League are all on the cards.

Monday

League of Legends: Weibo Cup group stage reaches its conclusion

The main League of Legends season begins with regional Spring events later this month and there is yet another pre-season event taking place in China in the form of the Weibo Cup.

The A-Tier event got underway on Friday with 12 teams competing. Four of the teams - Bilibili Gaming, LNG Esports, Oh My God and Weibo Gaming - come from China's top League of Legends division the LPL, while the other eight are development sides.

It is a great opportunity to see the most promising youngsters in League of Legends mix it with the best and Monday marks the conclusion of the event's group stage with two teams progressing from each of Groups A and B to the event's quarter-finals.

Tuesday

CS:GO: Latest round of Icelandic Esports League continues

Action in Counter Strike: Global Offensive is hard to come by at the moment but punters looking to follow the Esport can follow the Icelandic Esports League, which runs through to February.

There are 10 teams in the event with Atlantic Seafood, DUSTY and Por the three standout sides in the division right now and there are two games listed for Tuesday.

Struggling Fylkir are 10/3 to beat Por, who can be backed at 1/5 to come out on top, before Dusty are 1/6 to get the better of 7/2 shots Armann.

Wednesday

VALORANT: Action in the BEACON Open

For those in need of some VALORANT action, Wednesday marks the beginning of the latest finals in the BEACON Open.

Run by Riot Games and Promod Esports, the BEACON Open features teams from the UK, Ireland and the Nordic regions and it gets underway with the start of the upper-bracket in midweek.

Esports: Teams descend on Brazil

OnlyFins were crowned champions of the BEACON Open Split One finals in August and on Wednesday they are 4/11 to beat Wintermint, who can be backed at 2/1.

Les Petit Bouffons are also in action and are 1/12 to overpower Formulation Gaming, who are 6/1 to win.

Thursday

Rainbow Six: Premier League semi-finals conclude

Away from the worlds of CS:GO and VALORANT, the Rainbow Six Premier League continues this week with the latter stages of season five.

Season five of the R6 Premier League began at the start of December and attention turns to the semi-finals on Wednesday and Thursday.

Homeland Academy and Aura lock horns in the first semi-final on Wednesday, while in the early hours of Thursday morning, F2C are 8/15 to beat Green Wall, who can be backed at 11/8 to win.

The winners of each semi-final will advance to the event's Grand Final.

Friday

League of Legends: Weibo Cup final takes place

On Friday, punters could get a better idea of which LPL sides are shaping up well ahead of the LPL Spring as the pre-season event the Weibo Cup is set to reach the Grand Final stage.

The prize money for the tournament winners is yet to be determined but coming out on top will nonetheless be a huge confidence-booster.

Saturday

VALORANT: BEACON Open edges closer to finale

The minor VALORANT BEACON Open event continues on Saturday with the lower-bracket final.

The winner of that match will then move on to the Grand Final and face the winner of the upper-bracket final.

Sunday

VALORANT: Time for BEACON Open final

On Sunday, the BEACON Open will reach its conclusion. Regardless of the outcome, the two finalists will be guaranteed spots in the VCL 2023: Polaris Stage One. The estimated prize pool for the event stands at €5,750.
