Esports: Shocks galore in Call of Duty League

Day 2 at the Call of Duty League Stage 1 Major qualifier provided further shocks, as Boston Breach and Minnesota ROKKR separated themselves from the pack in joint first.

Elsewhere, the London Royal Ravens announced themselves as contenders with a dominant victory over the New York Subliners, while the Florida Mutineers denied Las Vegas Legion in a back-and-forth series.

Can the non-stop action continue on Day 3? Four further matches should provide us with further clues as we head towards the first major of the campaign.

It was a coming of age for Byron “Nastie” Plumridge, who produced an MVP performance. Given the hype surrounding the Subliners heading into that match, the value of the form should not be underestimated.

The market is not convinced, however, as LA Guerrillas are now expected to remain unbeaten. They defeated the Seattle Surge 3-2 on opening day, showing the value of new recruits Arcitys and Huke.

This should be a tight contest, despite what the market suggests. The Guerrillas have the heavy-hitting line-up, but the Royal Ravens possess strong team synergy and this has all the hallmarks of a series going the distance.

What: OpTic Texas v Florida Mutineers, Call of Duty League
Where: North America
When: 21:30, Sunday 4th December 2022
How to watch: Call of Duty League YouTube Channel
Odds: OpTic Texas 3/10, Florida Mutineers 12/5

The biggest mismatch of the day, according to the market, comes when OpTic Texas takes on Florida Mutineers in the second game of the evening.

OpTic Texas lost their opening game of the new season, but that contest was embroiled in controversy and it is best to take the result with a pinch of salt. Texas have the most stable roster in the league and they should be quick to get going as a result.

Florida Mutineers made a winning start against the Las Vegas Legion in yesterday's final match, but that has not convinced the market, which has them as the 12/5 underdogs.

On paper, Texas are the most likely winners, but their rocky start against the ROKKR does make them a riskier proposition at their skinny odds.

What: LA Thieves v Atlanta FaZe, Call of Duty League
Where: North America
When: 23:00, Sunday 4th December 2022
How to watch: Call of Duty League YouTube Channel
Odds: LA Thieves 10/11, Atlanta FaZe 4/5

The match of the night on paper and there is nothing splitting the LA Thieves and Atlanta FaZe ahead of their box office contest.

The Thieves made the best possible start to their season by brushing aside the Las Vegas Legion on opening night, dropping just an SnD on the way to a dominant 3-1 victory.

Conversely, FaZe were upset in the opening match of the season by the Boston Breach. That form has been franked by the Breach subsequently, but it was still a very disappointing start for one of last year’s strongest teams.

FaZe are more than likely to bounce back and it is ultimately very early days. On paper, the sides are very closely matched, with matches between the sides last year often going the distance.

With both teams at around the same odds, going over on the total maps market could be the way to go, with a barn-storming series in prospect.

What: Toronto Ultra v New York Subliners, Call of Duty League
Where: North America
When: 00:30, Sunday 4th December 2022
How to watch: Call of Duty League YouTube Channel
Odds: Toronto Ultra 2/5, New York Subliners 7/4

The final game of the first week sees the Toronto Ultra taking on the New York Subliners, with both teams desperate to get off the mark after losing opening forays.

Ultra came out second best with a still-unbeaten Minnesota ROKKR to kick off their campaign, while the Subliners were outclassed in a puzzling performance against the London Royal Ravens.

Both teams have question-marks to answer, especially the Subliners, who recruited the exciting duo of Skyz and Preistahh and failed to meet expectations by a wide margin.

The market expects the Ultra to win and that is little surprise, as they showed the most promise in their opening match.

In terms of firepower, the New York Subliners would have the advantage, making for a fascinating, if not confusing, puzzle to work out. At the bigger odds, the Subliners could provide value.
