England Women's goalkeeper Mary Earps retires from international football

England Women's goalkeeper Mary Earps has announced her retirement from international football.

32-year-old Earps wrote on her personal Instagram account:

This is the right time for me to step aside and give the younger generation an opportunity to thrive.

"It has been the greatest honour and privilege of my life, to wear this badge and represent my country.

"I wish I could do it forever, but sadly all good things must come to an end."

Earps' surprise decision comes after the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper lost her place as England's number one to Chelsea's Hannah Hampton ahead of this summer's Women's Euros in Switzerland.

The other goalkeepers who will be supporting Hampton in England Womens' Euros squad are Orlando Pride's Anna Moorhouse and Khiara Keating of Manchester City.

England head coach Sarina Wiegman has stated her disappointment at Earps' decision.

"I had hoped that Mary would play an important role within the squad this summer, so of course I am disappointed," Wiegman said in an FA Statement.

"Mary has made a huge contribution to not only the team, but the whole of English football. We will cherish those memories and of course give Mary the tributes she deserves after the summer but for now the focus needs to be on the upcoming Women's Nations League fixtures and the Euros."

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Earps received 58 senior international caps for England, winning Euro 2022 and reaching the final of the 2023 Women's World Cup as the Lionesses' number one.

Earps' achievements in an England shirt saw her voted the Best FIFA Goalkeeper award in 2022 and 2023 as well as the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year gong in 2023.
