Mason Crane has been named in an England squad for the first time in over eight years.
The Glamorgan spinner was a surprise inclusion in the 16-man roster and will act as a replacement for veteran leggie Adil Rashid who is still recovering from a hand injury.
Crane, 29, last featured for his country during the 2018 Ashes series in Australia and has never played 50-over cricket at international level. He leapfrogs fellow all-rounder Rehan Ahmed in the England pecking order as they prepare for an autumn in Pakistan.
Brendon McCullum will lead his side in either four or five matches, depending on whether they make the final or not, but they will not be able to turn to regular seamer Jofra Archer.
The Sussex man has seriously struggled with injury in the past and has been given October off after featuring heavily all summer long for England and in the Hundred.
Archer's absence means that Henry Crocombe gets a place in the squad. The 25-year-old recently announced that he would be swapping Sussex for Surrey next season and was included in the Test squad as cover for Ollie Robinson. He created history by becoming only the seventh player in history to take back-to-back hat-tricks in two first class matches earlier this year.
Sam Curran is also back after missing the Sri Lanka series win through injury and provides a wealth of experience in the middle order. The Surrey all-rounder had been mooted as Ben Stokes' replacement in the Test side, however, injury meant that he had to watch on from home. He could yet be on the plane to South Africa this winter if he stays fit.
