England's major tournament record against Scandinavian countries

England's seismic victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca means they will face Norway in a mouth-watering 2026 World Cup quarter-final clash in Miami.

The Three Lions produced one of their most dogged and resilient performances in recent history as they tamed a partisan crowd and managed more than 40 minutes of the game with just 10 men to triumph 3-2.

England's trip to Mexico City was earmarked as a tournament-defining fixture with the challenge of playing at altitude combined with Mexico's remarkable home record creating a daunting test, but Thomas Tuchel's side showcased all of the qualities required to go the distance in North America.

Next up for England is a mammoth showdown with the Norwegians in the Sunshine State, who produced an almighty shock in the Round of 16 by eliminating five-time winners Brazil.

The game appeared to be veering towards extra time when Norway talisman Erling Haaland broke the deadlock before adding a second in the dying embers of the game.

England's defenders will know all too well of the challenge Haaland poses, not least his Manchester City team-mates Marc Guehi, Nico O'Reilly and former colleague John Stones.

The Three Lions have met Norway on 12 occasions but never in a major tournament. They have, however, encountered other Scandinavian countries on the world's biggest stages.

We've looked back on England's major tournament record against countries from the Scandinavian region.

England's major tournament record against Scandinavian countries

Norway

Saturday's quarter-final fixture will be the first time England face Norway in a major tournament.

Mostly crossing paths in international friendly matches, England have won seven of their 12 meetings, with Norway winning two. There have been three draws.

The two sides last met 12 years ago in an international friendly at Wembley where Wayne Rooney's second half penalty proved to be the difference.

Denmark

England have encountered Denmark on four occasions in major tournaments, winning two and drawing two.

Perhaps the most memorable is England's 2-1 triumph over the Danes at Wembley in 2021 as Harry Kane's extra-time goal saw the Three Lions reach their first European Championship final.

  • Euro 92 group stage - Denmark 0-0 England
  • 2002 World Cup last-16 - Denmark 0-3 England
  • Euro 2020 semi-finals - England 2-1 Denmark
  • Euro 2024 group stage - Denmark 1-1 England

Sweden

England suffered defeat in their first-ever major tournament encounter with Sweden at Euro 92.

But the Three Lions have met the Blågult on four more occasions since then, drawing twice in the group stages of the 2002 and 2006 World Cup, before victories at Euro 2012 and in the 2018 World Cup quarter-finals.

  • Euro 92 group stage - Sweden 2-1 England
  • 2002 World Cup group stage - England 1-1 Sweden
  • 2006 World Cup group stage - Sweden 2-2 England
  • Euro 2012 group stage - Sweden 2-3 England
  • 2018 World Cup quarter-finals - Sweden 0-2 England
