England Euros Squad Odds: Joe Gomez 3/1 to make England squad

The 26-year-old has been a key figure in the Reds’ title push, with a raft of injuries giving him a much-needed run of games in the Anfield first-team.

Gomez featured at both left-back and right-back in the City clash, something he has been used to doing under Jurgen Klopp.

The former Charlton man has played all across the back-four this season, as well as being asked to play as central midfielder in a couple of matches to help fill a void.

Klopp backs Gomez hopes

Gomez has been a Liverpool player for nine years, but has often struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular.

The defender has made 37 appearances this season, having only played 35+ games in one of his previous nine campaigns with the Reds.

Even though he has often found someone ahead of him in the pecking order, Klopp has always had faith in him, even in the biggest games.

The Liverpool boss recently said: “He is one of those stories. What a wonderful player he is and I am so happy he can show that again.

“In midfield, the game is coming from all angles. Everything changes and he has dealt with it so well, it’s crazy. Really good and super important.”

Versatility could prove key for Southgate

Gomez has just 11 England caps to his name at present, with his last international appearance coming against Wales in October 2020.

Despite it being four years since his last involvement, his club performances have given him hope of winning a place on the plane to Germany for the Euros this summer.

One major tick in the box for Gomez is his ability to play in several different positions, which could be invaluable for a tournament.

With the likes of Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell and Reece James having been hit by injuries this season, England’s options at left back look particularly limited.

Manchester City teenager Rico Lewis started the last England match – against North Macedonia in November – with the 19-year-old currently 6/4 to make the Euros.

But the fact that Gomez can play anywhere across the back four is massively in his favour, especially if the 3/1 shot ends the season as a Premier League winner.

England have four friendly games left before the summer tournament, with Brazil and Belgium up next in March, before matches against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland in June.
