England Euros Squad Odds: Jarrad Branthwaite 4/6 after first senior call-up

Everton centre back Jarrad Branthwaite is in to 4/6 to make the England squad for Euro 2024, following a first senior call-up for the games against Brazil and Belgium at Wembley this month.

The 21-year-old has been a revelation at the back for Everton this season, partnering James Tarkowski in a defence that doesn't reflect the Toffees' league position.

Everton have kept eight clean sheets in the Premier league this term, the same as Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle. Branthwaite has featured in seven of them.

The Carlisle born central defender only featured in one game at the U21 Euros last summer, despite a stellar season on loan at PSV in 2022/23. Returning to Everton with a point to prove has seen Branthwaite come into his own at the back, not only as a centre half - where England remain fairly short - but as a left footed centre half, a rare commodity amongst those in contention.

Everton secured Branthwaite's services in January 2020 for a fee of around £1m from Carlisle, he spent a year playing in the academy before being sent out on a half-season loan to Blackburn Rovers in January 2021.

This was seen as a fruitful loan spell, leading to six Premier League appearances for the Toffees in 2021/22 at the age of 19. Positives could be taken from this period, as it became clear that Branthwaite, beyond being a towering 6ft4 dual winner, could take a ball in to feet.

However, a few moments of inexperience in a team desperately trying to stave off relegation led to Branthwaite being loaned to PSV ahead of the 2022/23 season for more guaranteed game time. This is where he really appeared on the radar of people across the continent.

He featured in 37 games in all competitions for the Eindhoven club as they finished runners up to Feyenoord in the Eredivisie and won the Dutch Cup, even popping up with four goals and two assists.

Upon his return, it was widely believed at Everton that Branthwaite was ready to step into the first team, even under the immense pressure of their fight against the drop. His performances have proved that decision to be the correct one.

'The Cumbrian Cannavaro' is the only defender in the Premier League to have won 100+ duels, made 100+ clearances and made 50+ tackles, an immense feat for someone so young. Now, the numbers may come from being in an Everton side where he is required to make more defensive contributions, however his success rate of 82.9% when making tackles on oncoming dribbling players is seriously impressive. For that, Branthwaite ranks ninth overall across Europe.

Add these stats to his ability to play with the ball and you have a John Stones type player, to play alongside the Barnsley Beckenbauer himself. If Branthwaite leaves his stamp on the upcoming friendlies, then we may finally have the answer to the question "who should play alongside John Stones for England?"
