England captain Joe Root responds to Brydon Carse nightclub incident

England captain Joe Root has said he is "really hacked off" and "really disappointed" following the latest off-field incident.

Fast bowler Brydon Carse, who was in line to feature for England in the second Test of the three-match series, was filmed in handcuffs outside a bar in Derby on Saturday night having been arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour before being de-arrested shortly after.

It again brings England's conduct under scrutiny and further raises questions surrounding the supposed drinking culture -- denied by Root earlier this year -- in the squad.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of the second Test, Root said: "If I'm being brutally honest, I'm really hacked off, I'm really disappointed.

"After last week's performance, we're sat here and we're talking about something that is not related to it at all.

"I've spoken to Brydon, and when I first found out my main concern was him as a person.

"I don't think I'm speaking out of turn by saying he's very upset, very apologetic and understands his actions. I'm sure that when he gets his chance he will say that himself.

"But I don't think it's the isolated incident itself, it's the fact that we keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it's detracting from what we're doing on the field."

A number of late-night incidents involving England cricketers led to a curfew being imposed earlier in the year, only for that to be broken by Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson. Root's abolished the curfew after taking charge

Root's second stint as England captain got off to a perfect start, securing an innings victory over Pakistan at Headingley, though has now been overshadowed by the Carse incident.

The second Test begins at Lord's on Thursday.
