Our resident boxing insider Rob Tebbutt previews this weekend's WBO super-featherweight title rematch between Emanuel Navarrete and Oscar Valdez, explaining where he feels the betting value lies.
Emanuel Navarrete squares off against Oscar Valdez for a second time on Saturday night, following their brutal, back-and-forth encounter back in August of last year.
Odds-on favourite Navarrete emerged victorious in the first bout by utilising his length and volume-punching to good effect, keeping Valdez on the end of his punches and not allowing him to get on the inside.
In isolation, it is difficult to watch the first fight and make a case for Valdez to settle the score.
However, with Navarrete looking less-than-impressive against Robson Conceicao before looking awful last time out against Denys Berinchyk, questions linger over how much the three-weight world champion has left in the locker.
Valdez, who looked somewhat rejuvenated in a 7th round TKO win over Liam Wilson in March has been one of the sport’s most entertaining fighters over the last decade.
Alongside esteemed trainer Eddy Reynoso, the 33-year-old will be hopeful he can produce one more big performance against a man he’s already very familiar with.
I do feel that this is a much more interesting fight fight second time around and am expecting another titanic toe-to-toe battle.
Both men are tough, so this is another distance fight for me - and it’s one where I see Navarrete rising to the occasion against an opponent, in Valdez, who is far-more suited to him style-wise than his last two.
