Champions League preview: Eintracht Frankfurt v Napoli

Serie A leaders Napoli go to Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt for Tuesday's Champions League last-16 tie with the Italians expected to secure a comfortable first-leg advantage.

Napoli on the charge at home and in Europe

Napoli have had an outstanding campaign so far as Luciano Spalletti's side not only finished top of their group in Europe but they have also streaked clear in the Italian top-flight and are 15 points ahead of next-best Inter Milan as they close in on their first Scudetto since 1990.

After being handed what looks like a favourable draw against last season's Europa League winners Frankfurt, Napoli will be keen to demonstrate they are one of the teams to be truly feared in the knockout stage of the competition by securing a healthy first-leg lead.

Napoli's form remains consistently good and they approach their trip to Deutsche Bank Park in fine fettle, winning their last five games and conceding just one goal during that run.

Osimhen a big goal threat

They had no problems seeing off Sassuolo in the league on Friday, winning 2-0, with two of the stars of the season so far, Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, on target.

Osimhen has hit 19 goals all competitions so far in 2022/23 and he is available at 7/4 to score Anytime on Tuesday and 5/1 to score First, while Georgian sensation Kvaratskhelia, who has 12 goals to his name, is 21/10 in the Anytime scorer market and 6/1 to find the back of the net First.

Osimhen has now scored in seven successive Serie A matches but there were fears he had suffered an injury when he limped off late on against Sassuolo, although Spalletti confirmed afterwards it was just a minor knock and the forward is expected to feature as normal.

Champions League: Chelsea and Tottenham remain in the hunt for quarter-final spots

Spalletti's men finished top of Group A, laying down an early marker with an eye-catching 4-1 home win over Liverpool in their opening game before victories followed both home and away against Rangers and Ajax.

They lost the return fixture against Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield - one of only three defeats all told for Napoli this term - but that was after they had already qualified for the last 16 so an easing off the gas was to be expected.

Goals galore in group

Napoli scored the most goals by any team in the group stage of this season's competition - 20 - and they were solid at the back too, letting in just six across their six games.

Frankfurt, who beat Rangers in last season's Europa League final to land a place in the Champions League for this season, finished way down in 11th place in the Bundesliga last term but they are faring better this time around.

Oliver Glasner's side are currently sixth, five points off the summit which sees Bayern Munich ahead of Union Berlin and Borussia Dortmund only on goal difference with all three teams joint together on 43 points.

Frankfurt edged out by Spurs in Group D

Frankfurt have won four of their last seven matches in all competitions and finished second behind Tottenham in Group D to book their place in the knockout stages with a record of three wins, one draw and two defeats from their six matches.

The German side will hope home advantage helps them on Tuesday and they have won their last four games in front of their own fans, three of them to nil, but keeping a rampant Napoli at bay seems a tough task.

The Partenopei have scored 12 goals in their last five games and have looked so good all over the pitch so far this season that they should have more than enough to pick up an away win to ensure next month's home leg at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona should be no more than a mere formality.
