EFL League Two Weekend Preview: Stevenage can continue promotion push

A lot of attention will be focused on matters in Qatar on Saturday, but there are big domestic fixtures to look forward to as well in the EFL this weekend.

League Two is no exception, as long as those teams in action can beat the weather and freezing temperatures to get their game on.

The matches at Carlisle, Rochdale, Crewe and Salford have already fallen foul of the frost, but there are still – at the time of writing – six games to look forward to on Saturday and also one match on Sunday.

In-form Stevenage can turn the heat on Mansfield

What: Stevenage v Mansfield
Where: Broadhall Way, Stevenage
When: 15:00, Saturday 10th December 2022
Odds: Stevenage 11/10, Draw 12/5, Mansfield 13/5

Stevenage are one of the in-form teams in the division and are currently sat second in the table, as they look to get back to League One for the first time since 2013-14.

Steve Evans is the man behind their recent success, which has seen Boro – 9/4 to win the league this season- lose just one of their last 11 matches and win nine of their 10 home matches.

Mansfield, one of Evans’ former clubs, are the visitors to Broadhall Way on Saturday (15:00) and they head into this fixture in contrasting form to their opponents.

The Stags were one of the pre-season favourites for promotion, but the pressure is mounting on boss Nigel Clough with his team currently sat seventh.

Mansfield have collected just two wins in their last seven matches and last time they were on the road, they were soundly beaten 3-0 at Harrogate.

Stevenage are 11/10 to pick up the three points, with Mansfield now 13/5 to collect the win whilst the draw can be backed at 12/5

Wimbledon have sights on the play-offs

What: Swindon v AFC Wimbledon
Where: The County Ground, Swindon
When: 15:00, Saturday 10th December 2022
Odds: Swindon 1/1, Draw 13/5, Wimbledon 13/5

Another League Two 15:00 kick off on Saturday sees eighth face 11th, as Swindon play host to AFC Wimbledon at the County Ground.

It’s been a season of inconsistency for Swindon, who go into this game with just one win in five in the league and following back-to-back defeats, failing to score in both losses.

Meanwhile, Johnnie Jackson’s visitors are on a roll and collected 17 points in their last seven League Two matches and are now just four points outside the play-off places.

Wimbledon did the double over the Robins last season, including a 0-1 success in this fixture, and are 13/5 to claim another win on Saturday.

One player worth consider in the goalscorer markets is midfielder Ethan Chislett, with the South African scoring twice in the last two league fixtures and is 4/1 to score at anytime against Swindon.

Gillingham could be lifted by Cup success

What: Gillingham v Bradford
Where: Priestfield Stadium, Gillingham
When: 13:00, Sunday 11th December 2022
Odds: Gillingham 21/10, Draw 9/4, Bradford 11/8

Having been relegated from League One last season, Gillingham find themselves second from bottom heading into Sunday’s home clash with Bradford (13:00).

The Gills last League Two win came at home to Sutton on 1st October, with goals proving the big issue for boss Neil Harris and his squad.

They have only scored six times in 20 league matches this term, the lowest tally in all four leagues, but there was some hope after their recent 3-2 success over Dagenham and Redbridge in the FA Cup.

Gillingham come up against a Bradford team that are once again seemingly underperforming, currently sixth after winning just two of their last six league games.

Mark Hughes has seen his team lose their last two matches, although they were against teams above them in the table – Leyton Orient and Northampton.

The home side can be backed at 21/10 to collect a much-needed win, with the draw 9/4 and Bradford available at 11/8
