EFL Cup Wednesday preview: Wolves and Man City eye last eight spot

The EFL Cup quarter-finals conclude on Wednesday with four Premier League clubs all hoping to make the last four.

Nottingham Forest, fresh from being dumped out of the FA Cup by Championship side Blackpool, host Wolves at 19:45 before Southampton entertain Manchester City at 20:00.

Forest boss Steve Cooper made 11 changes for the trip to Bloomfield Road and afterwards laid into those that came into his side, conceding "my players fell well, well short" in the FA Cup third round humbling.

Following the defeat, it's very likely Cooper will now largely revert back to the side that had previously beaten Southampton 1-0 in the league as they look to progress to the League Cup semi-finals at the expense of Wolves.

Forest are above Wolves in the top flight, with Cooper's side 15th, three points ahead of Julen Lopetegui's men, who are second-bottom.

Wolves impressing under Lopetegui

However, the Black Country outfit have shown plenty of promise under their new Spanish boss in recent games and were arguably unfortunate not to beat Aston Villa in the league last week when they drew 1-1 and then also when they held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Anfield in the FA Cup on Saturday.

An away win in the Full Time Result market appeals at 9/5 considering Wolves' recent eye-catching displays and they also ran out 1-0 winners at home when they faced Forest earlier in the season in the league.

Forest are four-time winners of the League Cup but their last success came in 1990, while Wolves have won this competition twice, in 1974 and 1980.

Saints face huge City test

Southampton are rated huge 14/1 underdogs in the Full Time Result to knock out Manchester City at St Mary's in the other tie.

Saints sit bottom of the Premier League after losing their last six top flight games and appointing Nathan Jones as new boss just before the break for the World Cup following the sacking of Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Jones has lost all four league games since taking over but he has delivered results in both domestic cups, beating Lincoln City in the previous round of this competition and then securing an FA Cup third round win at Crystal Palace last weekend.

That success at Selhurst Park will at least give Saints some hope they can somehow pull off a big shock by beating City but it's a massive ask, even if Pep Guardiola decides to heavily rotate his side.

City in fine fettle ahead of quarter-final

The Citizens have won four of their five games in all competitions since the club action resumed just before Christmas, knocking out Liverpool in the previous round and racking up victories over Leeds and Chelsea in the league before then hammering the Blues 4-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Their only recent setback was a 1-1 home draw with Everton but another slip-up seems highly unlikely as they look to stay on course for yet more silverware.

City, who are 5/6 to Win the Trophy Outright, have picked up the EFL Cup six times in the last nine years and are eight-time winners of the trophy overall, while Saints have never lifted the League Cup, coming close on two occasions when they were beaten finalists in both 1979 and 2017.

An away win at 1/5 is expected, while a City victory to nil at 1/1 in the Result/Both Teams To Score Market may well be the way to go considering City appear to have tightened up their defence of late with two consecutive clean sheets.
