Doncaster Rovers have been promoted to League One after their 2-1 win over promotion rivals Bradford City.
Rovers secured a 2-1 win over fellow Yorkshiremen Bradford City to clinch promotion with a game to spare in the fourth tier, thanks to goals from Rob Street and Billy Sharp.
It’s been a turbulent few years for the club who plummeted down the League Two table at the end of the 2022/23 season, picking up just six points in their final 16 games before failing to win any of their first seven games of the following season to sit rock bottom of the table.
Rovers then went on a remarkable run, winning 10 games on the bounce to climb from 21st in the table into the play-offs, where they were defeated on penalties by Crewe in the semi-finals.
Undeterred by play-off heartbreak, Grant McCann’s side have been there or thereabouts all season, and despite only winning four of their prior 10 games, victory over Bradford City at the Eco-Power Stadium secures their place in the third tier.
It’s Doncaster’s fourth promotion since 2008, and the club will now hope to find a footing in the third tier.
Veteran Billy Sharp, enjoying his first season in League Two since a loan spell with Rushden and Diamonds 20 years ago, has played a useful role for Doncaster, chipping in with nine goals, while Rob Street, on loan from Lincoln, has also come up with some vital goals, but it’s Luke Molyneux who’s stolen the limelight this term.
The 27-year-old has 29 goal contributions, earning a nomination for League Two Player of the Year, and the former Hartlepool man will be instrumental to any success Doncaster have next season.
