We analyse the credentials and statistics of Denzel Bentley and Derrick Osaze as the middleweight pair get set to collide in London with the WBO International title on the line.
Another headline slot at the iconic York Hall awaits Denzel Bentley this weekend.
This time the former world title challenger will face fellow Londoner Derrick Osaze over 10 rounds, with the WBO International title up for grabs.
These are two fighters with careers at very different stages.
Victory for Bentley will maintain his steady pace but a win for Osaze would elevate his standing in the game to a height that has looked insurmountable in recent years.
The big question leading into fight night is who will prevail?
Let's take a look at the 'Tale of the Tape'...
Denzel Bentley | Derrick Osaze | |
Age: | 29 | 30 |
Nickname: | '2 Sharp' | 'The Punching Preacher' |
Height: | 5ft 11ins | 5ft 9ins |
Reach: | 72ins | 70ins |
Weight: | Middleweight | Middleweight |
Trainer: | Raymond Bull | Barrington Brown |
Record: | 19-3-1 (16 KOs) | 13-1 (3 KOs) |
Last Fight: | Won - (TKO) v Danny Dignum (May 2024) | Won - (TKO) v Joel Julio (March 2024) |
The patience of Denzel Bentley in 2024 could serve him well in 2025.
He already has the experience of fighting the world’s best middleweight - current unified champion Janibek Alimkhanuly - in November 2022, but from there Bentley’s career hit choppy waters.
However, it is now back on course for another world tilt next year.
Losing his British middleweight title to Nathan Heaney last year shocked Bentley, who believed even if he was not at his best he would have had too much for the crowd favourite.
But becoming a father for the first time since then and fighting regularly has the 29-year-old in a good place.
The way he finished the useful Danny Dignum in two rounds was evidence that the heavy-handed Bentley still exists regardless of what his opponent had left to offer.
On Saturday 17th August, the Londoner is widely expected to be far too good for Derrick Osaze but he will find the 30-year-old a fresher and tougher proposition.
For now Bentley is happy to be fighting English-British title opposition because he’s a realist and knows the Heaney loss was a major setback.
Another defeat for ‘2 Sharp’ would be worse than any punch he’s ever taken, so expect him to shine once again at York Hall and add another win to his record.
However, in 2025 Bentley will expect to have paid his dues competing at a lower tier and will expect a meaningful and rewarding fight in a middleweight division where star power is truly lacking.
Strengths: | Weaknesses: |
Punch-power | Carries hands too low |
Combination punching | Machismo against lower-level opponents |
Uppercuts | Vulnerable during exchanges |
Jab | Attacks from distance |
Five years ago, Derrick Osaze was dreaming of English and British title fights.
The Ordained Pastor is one of boxing’s more interesting characters but his career is in need of a boost.
Beating Denzel Bentley would be the perfect pick me up for the 30-year-old ‘Punching Preacher’ who was once a football scout for Millwall.
Born in Peckham but living in Nottingham, Osaze wasn’t naïve enough to believe that winning Ultimate Boxxer in 2019 - which included a semi-final victory over Kieron Conway - would propel his career to new heights.
The middleweight understands that, in modern day boxing, sometimes simply winning isn’t quite enough, but Osaze isn’t one to go shouting his mouth on social media or do as many YouTube interviews as possible in one day.
He is true to himself, but 14 fights in seven years doesn’t quite cut it, no matter how you view the sport or your part in it.
On Saturday night, the Londoner needs to show promoters that he is a middleweight to have on their roster and TV screens. If he can drag Denzel Bentley into an inside fighting tussle, and not let the former British champion set his feet, then he can take this the distance.
But facts don’t lie, however, and having not fought in a 10-round contest for three years - with only three fights in that period against underwhelming opposition - you do wonder whether that lack of activity will prove decisive.
Without activity your fighting career fades into obscurity... and Osaze could indeed find himself there in the not too distant future.
Strengths: | Weaknesses: |
Inside fighting | Carries high chin |
Front foot pressure | Boxing at distance |
Backhand | Power |
