Keyshawn Davis faces the biggest test of his career as he challenges Denys Berinchyk for the WBO lightweight title in a bad-blood fight at The Theater, and our resident boxing expert Rob Tebbutt is on hand with his best bets for the mammoth clash.
Keyshawn Davis challenges Denys Berinchyk for the WBO lightweight title on Friday night in New York, with Davis looking to reaffirm his status as one of boxing’s next superstars.
Davis (2/15) enters the bout in red-hot form, having dispatched of Argentina’s Gustavo Lemos inside two rounds last time out, in a career-best performance from the Norfolk native.
Berinchyk (19/4) however, is no slouch himself, having won the title from three-weight world champion Emanuel Navarrete in May of last year, and the 36-year-old will be hoping his experience will prove too much for his American counterpart.
Tensions have boiled over as fight week has worn on, with Davis accusing Berinchyk and his team of racial abuse in the build-up to the Valentine’s Day showdown.
Davis has promised a first round knockout in response to the alleged abuse and, having dealt with Lemos so conclusively last time out, there is a feeling that the 25-year-old is starting to really find his form in the professional code. He looks spiteful, powerful and is one of the best technicians in the sport.
I feel Berinchyk will struggle with Davis’ speed and shot selection from the first bell and I really can’t see a way in which he holds on to his title.
The pre-fight hype may have just made things a bit more painful for him, and while I don’t expect it to happen in the first round, I am expecting a ruthless performance from ‘The Businessman’ as he collects his first world title belt in style.
