NRL: Demetriou off the mark with derby win

New South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou finally got off the mark as the Rabbitohs picked up a 28-16 win over the Sydney Roosters on Friday night.

Souths will be looking to finish in the top four of the NRL this season and now sit 1-2 following a mixed start to the 2022 campaign.

Positive signs

The Rabbitohs lost 11-4 to the Broncos in round one before battling back against the Melbourne Storm last week. They eventually lost 15-14 to a golden point but Demetriou has been taking plenty of heart from their performances.

And on Friday night, inspired by Latrell Mitchell, it all came together for the bunnies, much to the delight of the coach.

Rabbitohs out to silence the doubters

"We were slow to start against the Broncos and I thought we were unlucky last week, especially after dominating the second half," Demetriou said. "I felt from the kick-off tonight, we got back to what works for us and we made life hard for the Roosters."

Disappointed Roosters

Meanwhile Roosters coach Trent Robinson was disappointed with what he described as a lack of maturity in his side, and also felt they did not take their chances when they came along.

"We worked our way back into it at the end of back end of the first half but we were just really impatient to play our footy. We lacked the maturity to our game tonight," Robinson said.

"It wasn't a real tussle of a game. It was just set start after set start for both teams and we didn't hit our mark on the opportunities we did have."
