David Gilbert vs Stephen Maguire: Prediction, Tips, Odds and Start Time

Stephen Maguire can become a three-time World Championship semi-finalist with a victory over David Gilbert.

Stephen Maguire made it four Crucible quarter finals in his last eight visits to Sheffield with an impressive 13-9 victory over Shaun Murphy and the Glasgow potter now faces David Gilbert for a place in the last four.

Gilbert cruised past Robert Milkins 13-4 in round two and the 2019 World Championship semi-finalist will be hoping for a repeat last-four appearance.

Stephen Maguire to beat David Gilbert - 4/5

Maguire was visibly fired-up in his second-round tie with Murphy and the Glasgow cueman managed to keep his composure to secure a 13-9 victory over the Magician.

That was an excellent all-round display from the 43-year-old, who made eight breaks of more than 50 and sealed his place in the quarter-finals with a knock of 127.

Maguire’s motivation appeared to be at its peak for the clash with the Magician, given the long-standing rivalry between the two potters and On Fire will have been at his maximum in terms of emotion and determination.

Ordinarily it would be difficult to replicate that level of intensity on another occasion, but the small matter of a World Championship quarter-final should ensure that the Glasgow cueman can strike again.

Maguire got the better of Ali Carter, who has been a resurgent force this season, in his first-round Crucible contest and that followed qualification victories over Ashley Hugill and Yuan Sijun.

Clearly, it hasn’t been a campaign littered with success for the 43-year-old, but On Fire is back for a fourth World Championship quarter-final in eight years and Maguire is a two-time World Championship semi-finalist.

Gilbert will have been buoyed by Sheffield successes over Milkins and Luca Brecel, and those victories added to two qualification triumphs, are a welcome return to form for the Tamworth man.

However, the form of the wins over the defending champion and struggling Milkins looks far weaker than Maguire’s victories against Carter and Murphy.

The Glasgow cueman is a 4/5 to reach the semi finals of the Sheffield showpiece. The Scot is the rightful favourite and should probably be a little shorter than that offer.

Stephen Maguire highest breakmaker - 1/1

Gilbert made runs of 84, 89, 123 and 136 in his second-round victory over Milkins and those big breaks are fresh in the mind.

However, the Milkman delivered very little in that contest and it developed into something akin to a practice session for the Tamworth cueman.

Maguire’s 127-break against Murphy followed knocks of 114 and 134 in the Scot’s first-round success over Carter.

That made it eight centuries in two qualifying matches, and two games at the Crucible for the Glasgow potter, and they have come against opponents offering far more resistance than Milkins put up against Gilbert.

Of course, a 13-4 victory is an eye-catching success, but Maguire has produced big runs in the heat of a battle and backing the Glasgow cueman to make the highest break looks worth a punt.
