Stephen Bunting is searching for his first victory in this season’s Premier League and a last-eight Exeter clash with Luke Littler does not look like the ideal tonic for the Bullet’s troubles.
Luke Littler -2.5 legs on handicap - 1/1
World champion Littler has collected five points from the opening three weeks of Premier League action and is five behind table-topping Luke Humphries. However, the Nuke has performed at a seriously high level and should start to close the gap on Cool Hand Luke.
Littler was beaten 6-4 by Gerwyn Price in last week’s Dublin quarter-finals, but he averaged 99.78 in that defeat to the resurgent Iceman.
Prior to that loss, Littler dominated Night Two in Glasgow and the world champion was at his brilliant best in Scotland.
The Nuke averaged 104.59 when beating Rob Cross 6-5 in the quarter-finals and that was followed by numbers of 104.02 when downing Michael van Gerwen 6-2 in the semis.
The 18-year-old rattled in figures of 101.03 in a 6-5 success over Humphries in the Glasgow final and Littler’s Premier League performances have been at a consistent and high level.
The world champion was beaten 6-5 by Van Gerwen on the opening week of Premier League action, but the Nuke averaged a whopping 113.91 in that defeat.
Littler’s Premier League low average of 99.78, and peak of 113.91, makes this quarter-final showdown a worrying prospect for Bunting, who is yet to claim a single victory in this season’s competition.
It was always likely to take some time for the St Helens thrower to get in the Premier League groove, given the former BDO world champion hasn’t been a permanent participant in the competition since 2015.
However, defeats to Cross, Van Gerwen and Humphries have left Bunting rooted to the bottom of the table and there doesn’t appear to be much positivity heading into the Exeter clash with Littler.
The Bullet has registered averages of 94.03, 93.91 and 100.49 in his three league games and those numbers have yielded only nine successful legs.
Away from the Premier League, Bunting has made little impact in the recent Players Championship events.
The Bullet was beaten by Cameron Menzies at the last-16 stage of PC4 and the Merseyside man lost to Patrick Geeraets in round one of PC3.
Of course, the former BDO world champion has the class to turn things around, but at the moment, Bunting is struggling to win legs and that’s not ideal when taking on a top-level opponent in Littler.
The Nuke is being asked to give a 2.5-leg start on the handicap at 1/1 and given the form of both players, he should be able to win this with something to spare
Luke Littler to hit over 4.5 180s - 6/5
Littler has hit 22 maximums in his five matches in this season’s Premier League and another destructive scoring display is expected in Exeter.
The Nuke’s 180s line has been set at 4.5 on Night Four of the Premier League and that’s a mark he will hope and maybe expect to surpass.
The 18-year-old has only contested two Players Championship events this season, but the Warrington arrowsmith hit 17 maximums across four winning games at Players Championship 2 and those are pretty solid numbers.
Clearly, the world champion can easily move through the gears with increased motivation and better can be expected against Bunting.
A match contested over eight or nine legs should give plenty of opportunities for Littler to strike and getting on the Nuke’s 180s could be the way to play.
