It's been another winning week for Michael van Gerwen but it may be worth looking beyond the obvious for glory at the Hungarian Darts Trophy.
The best darts players in the world are heading to Budapest for the Hungarian Darts Trophy, the 11th of 13 events on the 2024 European Tour.
Dave Chisnall is the defending champion and No.1 seed though world champion Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen, a winner this week, head the betting.
What is perhaps good news for the field is the fact that Luke Littler, who has won twice this week already, has withdrawn from the tournament, which will have shaken up the betting.
Michael Smith to win - 12/1
A field of 48 players is gathered at the MVM Dome in Budapest for the Hungarian Darts Trophy, the 11th round of events on this year's European Tour.
Places at next month's European Championship in Dortmund are on the line with a £30,000 cheque and precious qualification points going to the winner.
Van Gerwen was the winner at Players Championship 22 earlier this week and gets a 9/2 quote in Budapest behind 3/1 favourite Luke Humphries.
All three have obvious claims though there are enough top darts stars winning prizes this year to make you think this event is wide open. Consider the first 10 European Tour events have produced 14 different finalists.
Remarkably, Michael Smith is not one of those but he looks a big price at 12/1 to join the roll call in Budapest.
The former world champion and world No.1 hasn't had an amazing year by his own dizzyingly high standards - that helps to explain why he is unseeded in Hungary meaning he starts in round one, with the top 16 entering the fray in round two.
But Bully Boy looked close to his majestic best in patches at last weekend's World Series of Darts Finals where he beat Rob Cross and Peter Wright among others before running out of steam against Littler in the final.
Smith has won a Players Championship floor event this year and the World Cup with Humphries. He also reached the semi-finals of the Premier League, World Matchplay and European Darts Open so there isn't much wrong with the Englishman's game.
This is the time of year when the money gets serious and the top professionals flex their muscles and Smith looks well equipped to win a competition in which he was a finalist in the inaugural event three years ago.
Wessel Nijman each-way - 40/1
Dutch youngster Wessel Nijman is currently in the Pro Tour's top 15 for averages this season, demonstrating that he can flow on the floor.
As recently as Wednesday in Wigan at PC22, Nijman produced an astonishing 108.74 to beat Raymond van Barneveld before going out to Gerwyn Price in round three with a 99 average.
He is a fabulous scorer, a five-time winner on the Development Tour this year, and is starting to look more comfortable on the stage.
Only last weekend the 24-year-old thumped Andrew Gilding 6-1 in round one of the World Series before losing in a deciding leg to Smith in round two.
He reached the final of PC15, beating Gary Anderson and Damon Heta, and beat Littler in round one of the Baltic Sea Darts Open, surely proof that he has what it takes on the big stage against the biggest stars.
Nijman has a bright future but back him to have a bright present as well. He is 40/1 in Budapest and looks a lively outsider.
Ryan Searle each-way - 33/1
Littler and Humphries are seeded to meet in round three while Van Gerwen is in the same bottom half of the draw.
Gerwyn Price - 8/1 - is the big beast in the top half though Ryan Searle is preferred at a tastier 33/1.
Searle has reached the quarter-finals six times in the previous 10 ET events in 2024 so is knocking on the door.
He has also reached four Players Championship finals, winning once, and with a favourable draw can go deep.
