Rob Tebbutt provides his best bets as Daniel Dubois puts the IBF heavyweight belt on the line against Joseph Parker on Saturday's spectacular The Last Crescendo fight card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Daniel Dubois and Joseph Parker contest Dubois’ IBF world heavyweight title in a clash between two of the division’s form fighters.
Dubois (2/5), fresh off a career-best fifth-round stoppage win over Anthony Joshua last September, is a man full of confidence after a string of impressive victories. Former WBO titleholder Parker (2/1) is on a tear of his own, having out-pointed vaunted punchers Deontay Wilder and, most recently, Zhilei Zhang in his previous two bouts.
While this is a bout that sees many split down the middle, I feel that Dubois comes into Saturday’s Saudi spectacle a rightful favourite, not only due to his much-talked-about punching power, but more-so his relentless work-rate. He starts everything behind a ram-rod jab, but also lets his combinations go on the inside.
While Parker boxed with discipline and no little amount of skill in his wins over Wilder and Zhang, neither man pushed the pace of the fight to the degree that Dubois will look to do on Saturday night and that is where I feel the New Zealander could come unstuck. In his only stoppage loss to Joe Joyce, Parker struggled to hold his man off and ultimately was out-worked before succumbing to an eleventh-round stoppage loss.
With Dubois showing improved punch resistance and an adopted-confidence, I think this is a tough fight for Parker who, while only 33 years old, has been at the top level for a long time and is the fighter with the more miles on the clock.
I’m expecting an entertaining fight where we’ll see Parker have his moments - the Kiwi is a top fighter in his own right - but I just feel the freshness and the pace of Dubois will be the determining factor on Saturday night in Saudi.
