Sri Lanka return to Sabina Park on Saturday with the chance to seal their first bilateral ODI series victory in the West Indies in more than 20 years.
A composed and clinical performance from the tourists under new skipper Kusal Mendis saw them claim a 41-run victory in the opening match.
Mendis’s sparkling 72 off 62 balls made the difference after Pathum Nissanka had laid the groundwork with a patient 79 off 103.
Dushmantha Chameera later polished off the West Indies’ middle order with four wickets in his second and third spells to stifle the hosts’ run chase.
Shai Hope’s side, for whom the captain top-scored with 56, must shake off rust and rediscover clarity in their batting approach before the series slips away.
The bigger picture for them is qualification for the 2027 Cricket World Cup and, after missing out on the 2023 edition, they will be desperate to beat one of their rivals for an automatic spot.
But Sri Lanka are not certain to be among the top eight teams in the ICC’s rankings next year and may need added security ahead of tougher tests to come against England and India later this year.
Best Bet - Sri Lanka -3.5 wkts/-12.5 runs @ 10/11
Alternative Bet - Dushmantha Chameera over 1.5 wickets @ 8/11
Bet Builder - Sri Lanka to win, Roston Chase to score 30+ runs & Jayden Seales 2+ wickets @ 6/1
Best Bet: Sri Lanka -3.5 wkts/-12.5 runs @ 10/11
Sri Lanka had to start well in this series and they did just that with a comfortable victory on a wicket that seemed suited to their strengths.
Sabina Park usually plays pretty slow, but with the proviso that batters that get in can confidently play through the line of the ball without fear of any miscues from the lack of turn.
Nissanka’s restrained knock at the top of their order was the perfect illustration of how to construct an innings in Jamaica, and sadly for the West Indies, none of their batters could quite replicate it.
The tourists’ victory gave new head coach Gary Kirsten the perfect launchpad for his tenure.
Sri Lanka looked tactically sharper, more disciplined with the ball, and far more assured in the middle overs than their opponents.
Kirsten’s early tweaks - such as promoting the technically sound Kamindu Mendis to open - didn’t fully come off.
But Sri Lanka’s intent to play proactive, modern ODI cricket was clear and Kusal Mendis certainly showed his captaincy credentials by leading from the front with the bat.
The West Indies, by contrast, looked rusty in what was their first ODI in six months.
They have now lost their last five ODIs and their rebuild under Darren Sammy remains a work in progress.
With Sri Lanka more settled, more confident, and better suited to the conditions, backing them to register another comfortable win looks a sound option.
Alternative Bet: Dushmantha Chameera over 1.5 wickets @ 8/11
If there was one player who truly lit up the first ODI, it was Chameera. His raw pace, reverse swing and ability to hit the deck hard proved too much for the West Indies middle order, as he finished with match‑winning figures of 4 for 67.
Chameera is used to getting the most out of slower surfaces by varying his release point and he also disguises his change of pace very well.
With the West Indies’ top order generally lacking patience and their middle order still searching for rhythm, Chameera looks well‑placed to strike at least twice again.
Sri Lanka to win
Roston Chase to score 30+ runs
Jayden Seales 2+ wickets
Pays 6/1
Sri Lanka have not played much 50–over cricket since back-to-back series wins over Bangladesh and Zimbabwe a year ago, but did show promise in a 2-1 home defeat to England earlier this year.
The West Indies have won their last four home ODI series, but the team is still in decline and they probably lose this match.
Chase was one of the few bright spots for the hosts in the opener and could contribute another score of 30 or more runs.
The experienced batter has cruised past that score in five of his last 10 ODI innings and recently produced a knock of 84 in a domestic match in Kingston.
Finally, add Jayden Seales to strike twice to this Bet Builder. The West Indies quick struck twice in the opener and collected six wickets from three matches in New Zealand, the last time his side played ODI cricket.
Sri Lanka won the opening match by 41 runs at the same venue on Wednesday.
Nissanka top-scored with 79 and Kusal Mendis made 72 on his captaincy debut.
Chameera struck four times with the ball, taking his career ODI wicket tally to 69 in 59 matches.
Chase has scored 30+ runs in five of his last 10 ODI innings.
Sri Lanka have won four of the last five ODI matches against West Indies.
The hosts are likely to stick with the same side, hoping continuity brings improvement.
Predicted West Indies XI: 1 John Campbell, 2 Justin Greaves, 3 Keacy Carty, 4 Shai Hope (capt & wk), 5 Sherfane Rutherford, 6 Roston Chase, 7 Matthew Forde, 8 Gudakesh Motie, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Shamar Joseph, 11 Jayden Seales.
Sri Lanka could also be unchanged, although they may consider bringing Eshan Malinga into the playing XI because of the reverse swing that was on offer in the first match.
Predicted Sri Lanka XI: 1 Pathum Nissanka, 2 Kamindu Mendis, 3 Kusal Mendis (capt & wk), 4 Pavan Rathnayake, 5 Charith Asalanka, 6 Janith Liyanage, 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Milan Rathnayake, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Asitha Fernando/Eshan Malinga.
