West Indies v England: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The only two teams to ever have won the T20 World Cup more than once face off in Saint Lucia as tournament co-hosts West Indies take on England in their first game of the Super 8s section.

Nicholas Pooran top West Indies batter - 13/5

The West Indies were in dominant form in the first group stage of this year’s T20 World Cup, winning all four of their games and racking up a net run rate of +3.257.

The hosts got the better of Afghanistan and New Zealand in that section, so they certainly come into this clash in better form than England, who were comfortably beaten by Australia in the group stage.

They then needed those opponents to give them a helping hand by beating Scotland in the final game after Jos Buttler’s men had got the better of Oman and Namibia in comfortable fashion.

They face a big challenge against a West Indies side who have proven a big hit at this year’s tournament.

The hosts became one of the few teams to make a score of more than 200 in what has generally been a low-scoring tournament when they made a total of 218-5 against Afghanistan last time out at this ground.

That is the highest score any team has recorded thus far and it was inspired by an impressive innings from Nicholas Pooran.

The 28-year-old hit 98 before he was run out in freak circumstances and he is fancied to build on that effort here.

Pooran has a solid record at this venue - he is the West Indies’ leading runscorer in this format at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground and has four scores of 30 or more from six starts here.

Take him to impress once more at this ground and be his side’s top runscorer.

West Indies highest first six overs score - 10/11

The battle between the West Indies and England to have the top powerplay total is impossible to split by the odds compilers, but it may make sense to side with the hosts.

The West Indies have recorded the highest first six overs score in three of their four games so far and their batting line-up has been much more impressive than England’s, who have struggled outside of opening pair Phil Salt and Jos Buttler.

Rovman Powell’s men can get off to another quick start and are fancied to have the highest first six-over score in this one.

Phil Salt over 24.5 runs - 5/6

England’s batters have not lived up to expectations at this tournament so far, particularly in the middle-order.

However, openers Salt and Buttler have been solid and the former is fancied to continue that trend here.

The 27-year-old averages 45.4 at a scoring rate of 9.80 runs per over in all T20Is against the West Indies bowlers who featured against Afghanistan last time out.

Salt made two T20 centuries against these opponents last summer and can build on his solid if unremarkable campaign so far.

The opener made 37 against Australia and the need for a strong net run rate in England’s final two group games meant he had to take unnecessary risks, being dismissed for 12 and 11.

In conditions that are likely to favour batters and against a team he has previously had success against, back Salt to go over 24.5 runs.
