England Women are expected to have more success in South Africa when they take on the Proteas Women in the 50–over format, fresh from sweeping their hosts 3-0 in the preceding T20 series.
Heather Knight’s team were pushed hard in the opening T20 match, winning in East London by four wickets with only four balls to spare.
But half-centuries from Danni Wyatt-Hodge in Benoni and Centurion enabled the Three Lions to secure much more convincing victories by 36 runs and nine wickets in the second and third matches.
England won seven of their eight completed ODIs in the summer, beating Pakistan 2-0, New Zealand 3-0 and Ireland 2-1 before heading off for an ill-fated T20 World Cup campaign in Dubai.
South Africa reached the final of that tournament, but have struggled in the longer format of late and lost their most recent ODI series 3-0 to India.
England Women to win 2-1 - 21/10
England are the overwhelming favourites to beat the Proteas, priced at 1/16 to follow up their T20 series win.
They certainly looked a cut above in their last two matches, posting an unassailable 204-4 in Benoni before restricting the home side to 168-6 in reply.
Wyatt-Hodge made 78 off just 45 balls, smashing 16 boundaries in a 112-run third-wicket partnership with Nat Sciver-Brunt, who made 67 off 43 balls.
South Africa were not completely overpowered in that match, however, as they hit five sixes in their pursuit of the imposing total but lost wickets at crucial moments just as the innings looked set to take off.
The Proteas were competitive in the first match of the series too when Nadine de Klerk made a late-order 29 off 16 balls to post a respectable score.
If Laura Wolvaardt, who starred in their run to the T20 World Cup final, can rediscover her best white-ball form then the matches could be close again.
The Proteas skipper, who made 43 in the semi-final win over Australia and 33 against New Zealand in the final, had only just returned from a successful stint in the Women’s Big Bash League when she played in the T20s.
She scored 22 in East London and 25 in Benoni before sitting out the dead rubber at Centurion to rest.
A refreshed Wolvaardt could make a big difference to the hosts and enable them to take one of the three games in a potential 2-1 series defeat.
Laura Wolvaardt 50+ Runs (first ODI) - 13/8
Currently the two leading female batters in ODI cricket, Sciver-Brunt and Wolvaardt should play major roles in the series.
Sciver-Brunt is ranked number one in the world right now after three years of consistent production for England’s white-ball side.
She averaged 131 across her six 50-over internationals in 2023 and is currently scoring at a rate of 68.5 per ODI appearance this year.
Wolvaart’s run of scores in ODI cricket over the past 12 months is arguably better.
The 25-year-old from Cape Town has struck four tons in her last 10 innings, including 110 not out against Sri Lanka Women at Kimberley - the venue for the first clash of the series.
Wolvaardt averages 49.38 in this format and can register her 41st ODI score of 50 or more against England on Wednesday.
