South Africa v India Predictions

South Africa Highest Match Opening Partnership - 8/11

South Africa were comprehensive winners of the first Test against India and they should be confident of wrapping up the two-match series with a win at Newlands.

The Proteas have triumphed in 10 of their last 13 Tests in Cape Town, including victories over India in 2018 and 2022.

South Africa is renowned as one of the toughest places to open the batting in Test cricket and that was certainly the case in the first Test in Centurion.

India captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 5 and 0, while his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal made 17 and 5, so the hosts are worth backing to post the highest opening stand of the second Test.

Dean Elgar marked the start of his final series with a match-winning 185 in the first innings and he and Aiden Markram are capable of laying a solid foundation for the hosts.

In India's last two Tests in Cape Town, they have managed first-wicket partnerships of 31, 20, 16 and 30, while Markram and Elgar put on 52 in the second innings of the 2018 clash.

Keegan Petersen South Africa Top 1st Inns Batter - 4/1

South Africa's Centurion win was particularly impressive given that captain Temba Bavuma was unable to bat due to a hamstring injury and top-six batters Markram (five), Keegan Petersen (two) and Kyle Verreynne (four) all fell cheaply.

Petersen, batting at number four, could bounce back in Cape Town, where he delivered the best performance of his brief international career against India in January 2022.

The classy right-hander scored 72 and 82 to lead his side to a seven-wicket win in a low-scoring contest at Newlands, where no other South Africa batter reached 50 in the match.

Petersen also made 62 and 28 in the first match of the 2022 series and he had been in good form before missing out at SuperSport Park, scoring 59, 9, 67 and 112 not out for South Africa A against West Indies A in November.

Kagiso Rabada to be Player of the Match - 10/1

Elgar, who will captain South Africa in his final Test due to Bavuma's injury, was a worthy winner of the player-of-the-match award for his epic century in Centurion.

However, fast bowler Kagiso Rabada also played a vital role, taking seven wickets and sealing South Africa's victory with a brilliant catch in the outfield to dismiss Kohli.

Rabada got rid of India captain Rohit in both innings and he has a superb Test record at Newlands, claiming 42 wickets in seven appearances at an average of just 20.95.

He took seven wickets in the 2022 win over India, five of them top-five batters, and looks a decent price to be named Player of the Match.

South Africa Team News

Captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out by a hamstring injury, so Dean Elgar will lead the side in his final Test match.

Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee (pelvis) is also sidelined, with paceman Lungi Ngidi and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj the leading candidates to replace him.

India Team News

Fast bowler Avesh Khan, a replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami, is hoping for a Test debut.

All-rounder Shardul Thakur will be assessed after being struck in the shoulder in the nets.

South Africa v India Stats

Only three of the 44 Tests played in South Africa in the last 10 years have ended in draws.

KL Rahul (101) and Virat Kohli (76) were the only two India batters to pass 40 in the first Test.
