New Zealand v South Africa ODI: Prediction, Tips and Odds

New Zealand complete their preparations for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy with a one-day international against South Africa at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Monday.

The Black Caps impressed in defeating Champions Trophy hosts Pakistan by 78 runs in an ODI at the same venue on Saturday and will aim to maintain their momentum by seeing off the Proteas.

South Africa, meanwhile, also take on Pakistan on Wednesday and will be using the clash with the Black Caps to try and get back on track after losing the last four one-dayers they played in 2024.

New Zealand v South Africa betting tips and predictions

Kane Williamson - New Zealand Top Batter @ 7/2

The Black Caps will be without Rachin Ravindra for the clash with the Proteas after he took a nasty blow to the head when attempting a catch in the win over Pakistan.

Left-hander Ravindra made 25 on Saturday, while New Zealand powered to 330-6 on the back of 58 from Kane Williamson, 81 from Daryl Mitchell and a stunning 106 not out by Glenn Phillips.

And star batter Williamson could be the one to keep tabs on on Monday, with the classy right-hander having passed 50 in eight of his last 10 innings in one-day international cricket, meaning that it is little surprise to see him as narrow as 2/1 to record a half-century against the Proteas.

He also has a superb record in his past 17 ODI innings against South Africa, making 670 runs at an average of 47.85, scoring three 50s and two hundreds.

Williamson has a simply stunning record of consistency in one-day internationals, having not been dismissed for single figures in an ODI since January 2019, a run that covers an astonishing 33 innings.

Kyle Verreynne South Africa Top Batter @ 3/1

While former captain Williamson can be expected to lead the way for the New Zealanders, Kyle Verreynne could be the Proteas batter to side with, even if Temba Bavuma is clearly the man in form.

Bavuma, while not so prolific in ODIs, has enjoyed a purple patch in Test cricket, making 504 runs in his last seven innings at an average of 72.

However, Verreynne will have a point to prove with the ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner, having missed out on a place in the Proteas squad, with Heinrich Klaasen and Ryan Rickelton the wicketkeeping options.

His hopes of doing that rest of him showing what he can do with the bat after a low-key campaign captaining the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20.

Provided he can cope with the pressure of needing to deliver and, with South Africa’s selection for this game seeming to be a bit of a mystery, Verreynne has plenty to build on after knocks of 67 and 38 against Ireland in his final two ODI outings in 2024.

Under 534.5 match runs @ 5/6

New Zealand's victory over Pakistan on Saturday saw 330-6 play 252 all out, a total of 582 match runs between the two sides at the Gaddafi Stadium.

With the venue unchanged for the clash of the Black Caps and the Proteas, you would expect plenty of runs to be put on the board again, but this time it may not be enough to fall the right side of the over/under set at 534.5.

South Africa have only passed 300 once in their last 15 one-day internationals, with only a further two innings yielding more than 250 runs.

The Kiwis have been significantly more productive with the bat in recent times, including putting 401-6 on the board against Pakistan at the last 50-over World Cup, which was still not enough to claim victory in a rain-affected clash.

Since then they have passed 300 twice and 250 twice more in 11 ODIs, so they may be expected to do the baulk of the scoring if the over/under is to be surpassed and they are strong 1/3 favourites in the match betting.

A 2023 World Cup meeting is the only one-dayer played between these two sides since 2019 and that match saw South Africa record a thumping 190-run victory in a showdown which produced 524 total match runs.
