Kolkata Knight Riders have already secured a spot in the play-offs of the IPL 2024 but they will be cautious of complacency when they take on Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday.
Gujarat have some serious work to do if they are to make the play-offs but they gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a comfortable 35-run win over Chennai Super Kings last Friday.
That followed three successive defeats but they have shown they can rise to the occasion and they will be eager to unsettle the highflying Knight Riders.
Kolkata Knight Riders to win - 8/11
Kolkata Knight Riders should be cautious of Gujarat Titans following their victory over Chennai Super Kings but the 8/11 favourites should still get the job done at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The Knight Riders have been the standout team in the franchise competition this season, winning nine of their 12 games to guarantee a spot in the play-offs.
They have just reeled off four wins on the spin against Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians again.
And from batting stars like Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Shreyas Iyer to a deep bowling department spearheaded by the likes of Mitchell Starc and Varun Chakaravarthy, they are strong in all areas.
Gujarat impressed against Chennai last time out but their openers shouldered the bulk of the scoring responsibility in that match and they had lost three successive matches beforehand, so are worth opposing.
Gujarat Titans to have highest opening partnership - 4/5
Gujarat's bowling department has been hit and miss all season in the IPL and it is at the crease where they are at their strongest, especially with an opening partnership of Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill.
The pair were central to Gujarat's success against Chennai last time out, equalling the record for the competition's highest opening stand with 210 runs.
Sudharsan struck 103 runs and Gill racked up 104, despite it being only the third time this year they have opened together.
On the other two occasions, they struck up opening partnerships of 64 and 54 against Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants respectively.
After their showing last time out, they will likely lead the way at the top of the order again and they should record a higher opening partnership than their Kolkata counterparts, who lost their first wicket for just six runs last time out.
Varun Chakaravarthy top Kolkata Knight Riders wicket-taker - 11/4
The bowling department is where this match could be won and lost and Kolkata's danger man is Varun Chakaravarthy.
The Knight Riders spinner has collected 18 wickets from 12 matches at 20.39 in the IPL this season and was named player of the match against Mumbai Indians last time out, finishing with figures of 2-17.
Gujarat's batting strength is at the top of the order but Chakaravarthy could be crucial at skittling through players lower down with his clinical leg-break bowling.
At 11/4, he looks a fine bet to be his team's top wicket-taker against the Titans on Monday.
