Glamorgan v Somerset: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Trent Bridge is the venue for the final of the One Day Cup as Glamorgan and Somerset look to finish contrasting seasons on a high.

The Welsh county failed to reach the knockout stage of the T20 Blast and look set to finish in the bottom two places in the second division of the County Championship.

But they were almost perfect in this competition, winning six and losing only one group game before sealing their place in the final for the second time in four years.

Somerset were going well on all fronts until mid-September when defeat to neighbours Gloucestershire in the Blast final was followed by another in the Championship against Lancashire.

Glamorgan v Somerset betting tips and predictions

Glamorgan to win - 11/10

After suffering two trophy disappointments in short order, Somerset’s determination to win the One Day Cup will be greater than ever.

Last weekend, Lewis Gregory’s men failed to defend a low total in the Blast final against Gloucestershire after being skittled for 124.

Back in red-ball action this week, Somerset were unable to stop Surrey clinching their third straight County Championship title when losing to relegation-threatened Lancashire at Old Trafford.

Needing almost 400 for victory in Manchester, Gregory’s men collapsed from 120-2 to 224 all out in the second innings in another shocking batting display under pressure.

The form of key players like opener Andy Umeed and wicketkeeper-batter James Rew will be a concern going into this clash.

Umeed, the highest runscorer in the competition, fell to a a first-ball duck at Old Trafford and lasted only two balls before losing his wicket for 4 in the crucial second knock.

Rew failed to fire with only 6 off 8 balls on Finals Day before making a combined 35 runs across his two innings against Lancashire this week.

There will now be a lot of expectation on the shoulders of young Archie Vaughan, who is playing well with both bat and ball, to make a big impact again.

Glamorgan, who overcame Warwickshire by 39 runs in Cardiff to return to the One Day Cup final for the first time since 2021, have no such problems in their batting department.

A fortnight after making 47 in the semi-finals, South African star Colin Ingram made 257 not out in Glamorgan’s County Championship clash with Leicestershire.

Subsequent scores of 27, 72, 81 and 15 suggest he can be relied upon for a score at Trent Bridge.

Netherlands international seamer Timm van der Gugten has also been among the wickets recently and his bowling economy rate of 3.19 in this year’s competition is the second-best of any player to have appeared six times or more.

If all-rounder Dan Douthwaite, who has taken 18 One Day Cup wickets at just over 20 runs apiece, maintains his brilliant death-bowling form then Glamorgan can scoop the prize they took by beating Durham at Trent Bridge three years ago.

Glamorgan - highest opening partnership - 13/10

Glamorgan’s openers have not built many solid platforms for their side in this competition, but that has been more to do with the nature of the seaming wickets they have played on.

Opening stands of 7, 43, 103, 65, 10, 28 and 27 in the group stage seem like nothing special, but each of them was the highest opening stand by either team in that match.

Somerset posted two scores over 300 in the group stage and had the tournament’s highest runscorer in opener Umeed, but Taunton is known to be a batter’s paradise in the middle of summer.

Given the form of Umeed and his opening partner in the semi-finals George Thomas has dipped of late, there is scope for Glamorgan to make a better start with the bat in this clash.

Thomas was out for a duck in a second XI game against Gloucestershire late last month.

Glamorgan opener Asa Tribe made 58 in the second innings of his side’s County Championship loss to Yorkshire this week and that could reignite his form after a run of low scores.
