England v South Africa: Prediction, Tips and Odds

After making the perfect start to the Super 8s, England can take a huge step towards the T20 World Cup semi-finals on Friday.

Jos Buttler’s men enjoyed a comfortable eight-wicket win over the West Indies in their Super 8s opener and next face a South Africa team that is also looking for back-to-back victories.

The Proteas made hard work of their narrow win over the United States and will face a much tougher test against the defending champions.

England v South Africa betting tips and predictions

England to win - 8/11

Having just scraped through the group stages, there were concerns that England’s level had dropped in the shortest format of the game.

But unpredictable Caribbean weather was the main reason for their struggles, as they played just one full match in their Group B campaign - against Australia.

The way they disposed of both Namibia and Oman in shortened games suggested they had found some form and that was confirmed in an impressive display against the previously unbeaten West Indies in their opening Super 8s match.

The co-hosts had won all of their opening four matches, averaging 169 with the bat, but England made light work of chasing down 180 to beat them, losing just two wickets in the process.

The opening partnership put on 67 before losing their first wicket, with Phil Salt providing the backbone of the innings as he finished unbeaten on 87 from just 47 balls.

England were also able to share the bowling responsibility between seven players, with the four Windies scalps spread between four different bowlers.

Jonny Bairstow – Top England Batter - 4/1

There are few more impressive sights in cricket than Jonny Bairstow batting with confidence and the Yorkshire batter goes into Friday’s clash in an upbeat mood.

After struggling in the early games, including a disappointing seven against Australia, Bairstow looked to have clicked when smashing 31 off 18 balls against Namibia.

The 34-year-old then made a rapid unbeaten 48 against the Windies, with a 184.62 strike rate, and drew high praise afterwards from his captain.

Buttler called Bairstow a “class player” and described his innings on Thursday as a “mature, really impressive” knock.

He headed to the World T20 event off the back of another successful IPL campaign, when he fired 298 runs in 11 matches - more runs than he had made in the previous two editions.

Bairstow has scored more international T20 runs against South Africa than any other team – 485 in total at an average of 44.09.

It’s worth noting that in the last three meetings against the Proteas, the England batter has averaged 49 and made 90 when the two teams met in Bristol in 2022.

Kagiso Rabada – Over 1.5 Total Match Wickets - 6/4

There had been mounting talk prior to the Super 8s stage that South Africa’s selectors were ready to drop Kagiso Rabada.

Having taken four wickets in four games in the group games, there were suggestions that the Proteas would replace the paceman with another spin option.

But Rabada stepped up when his team needed him in the clash with the US, helping to get South Africa across the line.

Having made 194-4 when batting first, the Proteas were in real danger of becoming the latest high-profile American scalp.

The US were 167-5 and on course for a victory with two overs remaining, needing what looked like a very gettable 28 off the remaining 12 balls.

Rabada was thrown the ball for the 19th over though and as well as taking the scalp of Harmeet Singh, he restricted the opponents to just two runs.

The 29-year-old was the pick of the South Africa bowlers, ending the Super 8s opener with figures of 3-18.
