England v Pakistan second T20I: Prediction, Tips and Odds

After being beaten by the weather on Wednesday, England and Pakistan should finally get their T20 series underway at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Having suffered a washout at Headingley in the series opener, the two sides head to Birmingham with the forecast looking a lot more favourable.

Both teams are keen to go into the World T20 event in June in good form, whilst also getting some much-needed limited-overs practise under their belt.

England v Pakistan second T20I betting tips and predictions

England to win – 4/9

Since England lifted the T20 World Cup trophy in November 2022, their T20 form has been disappointing and it feels almost like a reset in white-ball cricket.

Following their success in Australia, Jos Buttler’s men went on to play 12 T20 matches in 2023, winning just four and losing eight.

At home though, in very much English conditions in early summer, England are a different beast and will feel they can get back on track on Saturday.

The hosts have been beaten in their last two T20 internationals at Edgbaston – losing to both New Zealand and India – but a greener pitch in Birmingham is likely to play into their hands.

Prior to those two matches, England had won three on the spin in Birmingham and will be confident of returning to winning ways.

England also have the advantage in the head-to-head stats, having won 18 of the 29 T20 international matches between the two teams.

Top England Batter - Jos Buttler – 13/5

Skipper Buttler is one of the England camp who has been playing in the Indian Premier League and has been in good form heading into this series.

The 33-year-old was in the top 25 of the 2024 IPL batting stats, having scored 359 runs in 11 matches for the Rajasthan Royals – averaging 39.89.

Buttler, who is the only player in this season's IPL to have struck at least two centuries (both unbeaten), has an international T20 average of 34.84 while he has also scored six half-centuries in 32 innings in England.

After a disappointing showing in the 50-over World Cup, there has been a bit of pressure heaped on Buttler’s position as captain.

He admits he needs to improve his own communication but the best way to cement his place as skipper would be to rack up a big score.

Shaheen Afridi – Over 1.5 Wickets – 5/4

Shaheen Afridi is currently Pakistan’s top-ranked T20 bowler, sat 14th in the world standings, and his past performances in England suggest he could be key to his country’s chances of success.

The paceman has claimed 88 wickets in 64 international T20 matches, with an economy rate of 7.72 going into this series.

This is Afridi’s first clash at Edgbaston against England, but has enjoyed success in the Midlands previously – taking 3-30 in 3.2 overs at Trent Bridge in 2021.

The 24-year-old has had plenty of experience of English pitches as well in recent years, which will also help his bid to rip through England's top order. As well as playing county cricket with Hampshire, Middlesex and Nottinghamshire, Afridi also featured for the Welsh Fire in last season’s Hundred.

Shaheen only conceded one boundary in the World T20 final and took the wicket of England opener Alex Hales.
