Chennai Super Kings v Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Chennai Super Kings start the defence of their IPL title against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and this looks to be a very tricky assignment for the reigning champions.

No team has won more IPL titles than the Super Kings, who beat Gujarat Titans in a high-scoring final last season to join Mumbai Indians on five as the most successful franchises in the history of the competition.

Chennai's opening opponents Royal Challengers, in contrast, have never won the tournament despite having some of T20 cricket's biggest stars on their roster.

They are hoping that the big-money signing of Australia all-rounder Cameron Green, along with the return to action of India superstar Virat Kohli, will help end their long wait for glory.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru - 6/5

IPL punters must be wary of writing off the Super Kings, who finished ninth out of 10 in the 2022 league table before roaring back to lift the trophy last season.

Veteran skipper MS Dhoni this week handed over the captaincy to opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was the leading runscorer in the 2021 IPL.

The previous time Dhoni stepped down as captain was in 2022, when Chennai suffered six defeats in eight games under star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, so it will be interesting to see how they fare in the Gaikwad era.

The change of leadership, announced just a days before the opening game of the season, is not the only challenge facing CSK.

New Zealand's Devon Conway, whose opening partnership with Gaikwad was so crucial to their success in 2023, is out with a broken thumb and ace Sri Lankan death bowler Matheesha Pathirana is sidelined due to a hamstring problem.

Shivam Dube, who clouted 35 sixes in just 14 innings last season, has only just returned from injury, so the champions could be worth opposing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Australia international Green, who slammed his maiden IPL century for Mumbai Indians last season, joins compatriot Glenn Maxwell and veterans Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli in an exciting Royal Challengers top order.

Maxwell should also play a key role with the ball in spin-friendly conditions, while Indian pacemen Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep could unsettle a new-look Chennai batting unit.

Virat Kohli most sixes for Royal Challengers Bengaluru - 8/1

While Chennai are missing Conway, their leading runscorer in 2023, Bengaluru have key batters Du Plessis and Kohli available for Friday's curtain-raiser.

Only Gujarat's Shubman Gill scored more runs than Du Plessis's 730 last season and Kohli, the most prolific batsman in IPL history, racked up 639 in 14 innings.

The India icon missed the recent Test series against England, which coincided with the birth of his second child, but he could return to action with a bang.

Kohli hit 16 sixes last season and was noticeably more aggressive in ODIs in 2023, clearing the ropes eight times in an unbeaten 166 against Sri Lanka at the start of the year.

The presence of Du Plessis, Maxwell and Green in the RCB line-up lengthens the odds about Kohli hitting the most sixes for the visitors and he is worth a small bet to outperform his fellow big-hitters.

Ajinkya Rahane over 22.5 match runs - 5/6

Chennai middle-order man Ajinkya Rahane has had a lean run of first-class form for Mumbai leading up to the IPL, but he could be inspired by the change of format.

Rahane came out of his shell in spectacular fashion last season, swatting 326 runs at a strike-rate of 172.5 per 100 balls.

That was a sensational improvement on his scoring rates of 104, 100 and 106 in the previous three years and he is worth backing to score 23 or more runs in his first knock of 2024.

Rahane had great success as an opener for Rajasthan Royals, often anchoring the innings, so his reinvention as a middle-order dasher came as something of a surprise.

He smashed 71 not out off just 29 balls against Kolkata last season, also contributing a vital 27 from 13 deliveries in the final against Gujarat and he could play an important role for Chennai alongside new signings Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell.
