Australia v Scotland: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The Group B schedule at the T20 World Cup comes to its conclusion with Australia taking on Scotland at Gros Islet in Saint Lucia, a match which may very well have implications for England, too.

The table-topping Aussies are already certain of their place in the Super 8s after winning their opening three matches.

But if England land the odds against Namibia in the earlier game in Antigua, then the Scots are going to have to produce the biggest cricketing upset in their history to escort Mitchell Marsh's men into the next phase.

Australia v Scotland betting tips and predictions

First Over of Match - Scotland Total Runs Over 4.5 - 10/11

Australia truly are the kingmakers in Group B of the T20 World Cup but expect them to resist the temptation to manufacture England's demise by showing Scotland no mercy at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia.

Courtesy of winning their first three group games, Australia are through to the Super 8s and no matter what happens this weekend, whether they finish first in Group B or second, they know which group they will be in come the next phase.

That lack of jeopardy is a minor concern for England who, presuming they beat Namibia in the match before, will need the Aussies to beat the Scots to progress.

Australian seamer Josh Hazlewood sparked debate earlier in the week suggesting it would be in Australia's "best interest" to see England eliminated, though the Aussie camp has been quick to laugh off those comments as little more than playful.

What is for certain is that captain Marsh is in the privileged position of being able to rest one or two players ahead of the Super 8s and bring in squad players like Cameron Green, Josh Inglis or Ashton Agar for the showdown with the Scots.

That will please Scotland, though whoever wears the shirt it is still going to be a powerful Australian unit heading out into the middle.

Conspiracy talk to one side, Scotland will assume they are going to have to be positive so take them to score over 4.5 runs in the first over of their innings, be that batting first or chasing.

George Munsey and Michael Jones took Mark Wood for six runs in the first over against England while the two of them plundered eight off Namibia's first six balls. A fast start is critical and they should be confident of getting off to one.

Brandon McMullen Over 12.5 runs - 5/6

What is for certain about Scotland is that they don't look out of place at a top-level international cricket tournament and won't be fazed by the magnitude of the task facing them.

Their players back themselves to show they belong, among them Brandon McMullen, who has impressed coming in first down in his two visits to the crease.

The South African-born batting all-rounder chipped in with 19 runs in the win over Namibia and then stole the show with a 31-ball 61 not out in the win over Oman.

The 24-year-old came into the competition on the back of a couple of good knocks against the UAE and Canada in Dubai and he averages 34 with a strike-rate of just shy of 150 in his fledgling international T20 career.

Australia's bowling attack is a step up in class from anything he has faced before but his match runs still look underrated at 12.5.

Mitchell Marsh Player Performance - Over 29.5 - 5/6

Aussie skipper Marsh has not bowled at the T20 World Cup so far as he recovers from a hamstring injury, but that may well change against Scotland.

The team doctor says Marsh is ready to turn his arm and get at least a couple of valuable overs in before the Super 8s.

Clearly if he does his player performance of 29.5 looks cheap (20 points per wicket, 10 per catch/stumping, one per run). Indeed, even without bowling he can clear 29.5 as he did against England, registering a player performance of 35 followed up by 28 against Namibia.
