Coronation Stakes: Runners, Riders and Non-Runners

It's day four of five at Royal Ascot on Friday and the feature race is the Coronation Stakes as some of the leading three-year-old fillies around bid for Group 1 glory.

Newmarket's 1000 Guineas winner Mawj was an eleventh-hour absentee and that leaves runner-up and subsequent Irish 1000 Guineas winner Tahiyra as the one to beat here.

Here's a look at the contenders in the Coronation Stakes and a reminder that every race across the five days of the meeting can be watched on the bet365 live sports streaming service.

Comhra

The Contenders

Tahiyra @ 4/7
Trainer: Dermot Weld
Jockey: Chris Hayes

Mightily impressive winner of the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes last season on only her second start, beating Meditate. Came off second-best in an epic 1000 Guineas battle with Mawj at Newmarket and has since won the Irish version, once more with Meditate behind in second spot.

Didn't appear to go too deep in the well to win that after having to wait for a gap to challenge and she'll be a tough nut to crack now.

Iconic trainer first won this in 1978 with Sutton Place and may have landed on a second filly good enough to score some 45 years on.

Meditate @ 5/1
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Jockey: Ryan Moore

No Nay Never filly beat Mawj to win the Albany here last summer but saw her four-race unbeaten run ended when second to Tahiyra in the Moyglare at the Curragh over 7f in September. Second again in the Cheveley Park at Newmarket (6f, good) afterwards and signed off with impressive Breeders' Cup Fillies' Turf win at Keeneland on first go at the mile.

Only sixth in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and while she got much closer to Tahiyra at the Curragh, finishing second, there's a feeling that rival had more in the tank.

Queen For You @ 8/1
Trainer: John & Thady Gosden
Jockey: Rab Havlin

Filly out of her connections' 2012 Coronation Stakes winner Fallen For You, she won a course and distance novice event on belated debut in early May and has since finished narrow second in a York Listed race over this trip behind Sounds Of Heaven.

The Kingman filly still looked a work in progress on the Knavesmire and so further improvement is very likely here.

Sounds Of Heaven @ 10/1
Trainer: Jessica Harrington
Jockey: Ronan Whelan

Leopardstown maiden winner on second and final 2YO start and edged out re-opposing Queen For You to win a Listed mile event at York in last month's seasonal bow. Did well to rally for that win after being headed and was ceding race-fitness to the runner-up.

Both Kingman fillies are open to further progress now. Trainer Jessica Harrington won this race in 2018 and 2020 and has already been amongst the winners here this week.

Mammas Girl @ 22/1
Trainer: Richard Hannon
Jockey: Kevin Stott

Newmarket novice winner over 7f (good) in October's debut and looked impressive when decisively winning the Nell Gwyn back at Headquarters on good-to-soft in April.

Limitations seemingly exposed in the 1000 Guineas afterwards, finishing in midfield and with 15-lengths to find on Tahiyra based on that Rowley Mile run. Too soon to be dismissive ahead of what will be her first run away from Newmarket.

Remarquee @ 33/1
Trainer: Ralph Beckett
Jockey: Rob Hornby

Kingman filly took her record to 2-2 when scoring in Newbury's Fred Darling (7f, soft) in April, coming with a strong run after being held up and keeping the second at bay despite still looking a bit in need of the experience.

Subsequent Oaks winner Soul Sister trailed home in last spot that day, heavily eased, but overall the form has taken plenty knocks.

She travelled well but found little in Newmarket Guineas since but it remains early days for her and experience will be a positive.
