Australian Football: Corica ready for Champions League challenge

Sydney FC coach Steve Corica says his side are up for the challenge of taking on Asia's best after easing into the group stage of the AFC Champions League.

The Sky Blues are looking to finish in the top six of the A-League but their schedule is about to get a lot more hectic with the games set come thick and fast.

Comfortable win

Sydney outclassed Philippines side Kaya FC on Tuesday evening with a comfortable 5-0 win.

Trent Buhagiar opened the scoring before Adam Le Fondre and Bobo both grabbed a brace to complete the scoring.

Barbarouses back for Sydney

In the build up to the game Corica made reference to the fact that qualification would bring complications and a fixture pile up, but they still wanted to be there.

And after Tuesday night’s win he admitted they are delighted to be in the group stages.

"The club wants to be in the tournament and play against the best in Asia, and now we have that opportunity," Corica told reporters. "One of the reasons players come to the club is to play in Asia and play against the best.

"It gives them opportunities as well if they want to move on in the future it is a stepping stone."

Six-match committment

Sydney will now play an extra six games but Corica is back his players to cope with the extra as they push for silverware on two fronts.

"We will now have a lot of games coming thick and fast," Corica added. "But we are used to it (fixture changes) at short notice and that is just part and parcel now."
