It has been revealed that Conor Benn would be eligible to fight the winner of Manny Pacquiao v Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight world title.
While the official announcement for Chris Eubank Jr v Conor Benn 2 is reportedly imminent, it’s said that Benn would be eligible for a shot at the WBC welterweight world title.
Speaking to Sky Sports, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman explained the reasoning for this.
"He is ranked by the WBC, Eubank also is ranked by the WBC, different weight categories. It is up to him (Benn).
Right now if he's doing a rematch, then he's not going to challenge for the WBC for some time but he's eligible.
- Mauricio Sulaiman (WBC president), Sky Sports
"Sensational fighter, great story, he came up in weight, gave advantage, tremendous fight."
"He lost in middleweight, outside of his division in a highly competitive dramatic, great fight so he is absolutely ranked in a high place.
"(Benn) is right there. He's No 3 ranked, right at the top. He has all the merits and he has the level to bid for the WBC title at any stage.
“If he doesn't fight the rematch and he's available and ready, then that could be one of the great fights of this year."
While Benn’s chances of fighting for the WBC welterweight world title are seemingly hindered by the fact a rematch with Eubank Jr is inevitable, he may be eyeing up the possibility should the opportunity present itself in the not too distant future.
With an expected date of late September or early October for Eubank Jr v Benn 2, Manny Pacquiao will make his unexpected return to the ring against Mario Barrios on 20th July, in a bid to claim the WBC title.
Should the stars align, it’s hard to see a world in where Benn wouldn’t fancy a shot at the world title against one of Pacquiao or Barrios, but he’s got business to deal with in the form of Eubank Jr first and foremost, with vengeance no doubt on his mind.
