We analyse the credentials and statistics of Conor Benn and Peter Dobson as the pair get set to contest an intriguing super-welterweight showdown in Las Vegas on Saturday February 3rd.
The old adage states that there is no such thing as bad publicity. Well, Conor Benn is putting that theory to the test.
In October 2022, ‘The Destroyer’ was on the cusp of becoming one of the biggest stars in British boxing, but his potential breakthrough fight against Chris Eubank Jr was cancelled after Benn tested positive for a banned substance.
Benn returned to the ring last September, in Florida and is once again fighting in the US, as he takes on Peter Dobson, 3 February, in Las Vegas.
The American, Dobson, is unbeaten, but untested.
Can the underdog upset the odds or will Benn take another step toward stardom?
Let’s check out the Tale of the Tape...

The career of Conor Benn has been a strange one.
After a short period in the unpaid ranks, ‘The Destroyer’ turned professional with Matchroom, at the time, the biggest promoter in the country.
His debut took place on the high-profile card, headlined by Anthony Joshua in his first world title fight.
Benn continued to receive televised slots on big bills, but it had little to do with talent. Benn’s father, Nigel, had been a two-weight world champion and one of the most popular British boxers in recent history. Nepotism was alive and well.
Slowly, Benn improved and developed a reputation as a fan-friendly fighter. Impressive knockout wins over, former world champion, Chris Algieri and, title challenger, Chris van Heerden caused the hype to kick into overdrive.
Then the performance-enhancing drug scandal happened.
If the 27-year-old is to regain the momentum he has lost, he will need to start delivering highlight-reel stoppages to capture the imagination of the general public once more.
In truth, Benn is not as good as his most ardent supporters would have you believe, nor is he as bad as the detractors state.
Dobson should provide a yardstick to gauge the Englishman’s potential.
Strengths: | Weaknesses: |
Power | Moves back in straight lines |
Speed | Keeps his gloves low |
Applies pressure | Stays in range too long |
Lateral movement | Porous defence |
Talent alone is not enough in boxing.
While Benn received opportunities because of his last name, Peter Dobson has had to take a harder route.
‘Pistol Pete’ won the New York Golden Gloves as an amateur and has sparred the likes of Jaron Ennis and Terence Crawford, but his career has not taken off.
He has been a professional for almost 10 years, but has only had 16 fights, none of which have been in the last 18 months. Yet, Dobson has not lost faith.
The Bronx native felt his big break had arrived when he secured a fight with, Olympian, Pat McCormack. Unfortunately, the bout fell through after the Englishman sustained an injury.
The world works in funny ways. Despite the disappointment of big opportunity failing to come to fruition, Dobson has landed a bigger one.
This is the 33-year-old’s chance and he may not get another.
As such, do not expect Dobson to just make up the numbers, he is a live underdog.
Strengths: | Weaknesses: |
Patience | Throws wide hooks |
Body shots | Moves back in straight lines |
Use of feints | Pushes out his punches at times |
Timing | Inactivity |
