Community Shield previous winners

The Community Shield has long served as the annual curtain raiser for the football season and we've taken a look back at previous winners since its inception more than a century ago.

Previously known as the Charity Shield, the game that is currently contested between the winners of the top flight and the FA Cup dates all the way back to 1908.

In the inaugural match Manchester United, the champions of the old first division, took on the winners of the Southern League, Queens Park Rangers at Stamford Bridge.

After a 1-1 draw in their first meeting, the game went to a replay for the first and only time in the competition's history, with United prevailing 4-0.

That triumph marked the first of 21 Community Shield wins for the Old Trafford club, more than any other team.

Traditionally held at various venues around the country, from 1974 Wembley Stadium became the permanent home of the annual fixture, with the Principality Stadium hosting games between 2001 and 2006 while the new Wembley was under construction.
