2026 Commonwealth Games Venue Guide

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow from 23rd July to 2nd August with around 3,000 athletes expected to compete across 215 events in 10 different sports.

This will be the second time Glasgow has hosted the Games, having also done so in 2014, taking on the responsibility this year after the Australian state of Victoria cancelled plans to stage the multi-sport event, citing escalating costs.

A total of four venues will be used across the 11 days of action and below we have provided a guide on each of those ahead of competition getting underway.

Scottish Event Campus

The Scottish Event Campus incorporates three venues in one and in total six sports will be held at the campus during the Games.

The Hydro

First opened in 2013, The Hydro played a key role when Glasgow hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with netball and gymnastics both taking place there.

Netball will once again be staged at The Hydro this year, while the venue also has the honour of hosting the opening ceremony.

A multi-purpose indoor arena, The Hydro has staged many other sporting events, as well as music concerts, political debates and it has also been used as a filming location for both films and television series.

SEC Armadillo

Just as it did in 2014, the SEC Armadillo will host weightlifting and para powerlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Since opening in 1997, the renowned auditorium has become widely regarded as one of Glasgow's most iconic buildings and has also staged auditions for popular television shows such as Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor.

SEC Centre

The SEC Centre is Scotland's largest exhibition centre, boasting five interconnected exhibition halls and meeting spaces, so it is no surprise that it will stage a wide variety of sports during the Games.

Judo and boxing events were both held at the SEC Centre for the 2014 Games and they will be again this year, while bowls and para bowls, as well as 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball, will also be staged at the venue.

Tollcross International Swimming Centre

The Tollcross International Swimming Centre will, unsurprisingly, stage the swimming events at the Games, just as it did in 2014.

The venue is internationally recognised and as well as this being the second Commonwealth Games it has staged, it has also hosted events such as the 2015 World Para Swimming Championships, the 2018 European Aquatics Championships and the 2019 European Short Course Championships.

Glasgow International Arena

The Glasgow International Arena is the home of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, named after the six-time Olympic gold medallist and two-time Commonwealth champion.

Purpose built for the 2014 Games, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will once again host track cycling and para track cycling in 2026, while the arena will also stage artistic gymnastics.

Scotstoun Stadium

Scotstoun Stadium is usually used as a rugby union venue and is the home ground for United Rugby Championship side Glasgow Warriors, but for the 2026 Games it will stage the athletics and para athletics events.

Temporary seating is expected to be added for the Games to increase the capacity to between 10,000 and 11,000.

Scotstoun is no stranger to staging athletics events while it was also used to host Synchronised Swimming during the 2018 European Championships, as well as the squash and table tennis competitions at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
