Cole Palmer 5/2 to start in England's opening Euros match against Serbia

Cole Palmer is priced at 5/2 to be included in England's starting XI for their opening match of Euro 2024 after netting his first international goal in a friendly against Bosnia.

To Start for England v Serbia

Positioned behind Ollie Watkins as the No.10, Palmer flourished and showcased his worth to Gareth Southgate's cause as he converted from the penalty spot to send England on their way to a 3-0 victory at St James' Park.

Southgate fielded an inexperienced side for the encounter and it was telling in a lacklustre opening half, with England mostly lethargic in the opposition third and Bosnia comfortable with sweeping up what lay in front of them.

Palmer and Crystal Palace midfielder Ebere Eze were two bright sparks, with the latter adding individuality to the hosts' attacking forays and the 25-year-old will have done no harm to his chances of making the final 26-man squad, which is confirmed on June 8.

On top of his first England goal, Palmer demonstrated an elusiveness in the opposition box and the Chelsea ace made a series of marauding runs both on and off the ball, but lacked the service to capitalise.

In his post-match press conference, Southgate was critical of Palmer for being "too precise" and yet his adventure and invention was of a stark contrast to the conservatism that has often anchored this England side.

It's been a meteoric rise for Palmer. He's made Chelsea's £42.5million investment appear a bargain with an astonishing return of 33 goal involvements across the 2023/24 Premier League campaign; were it not for his phenomenal former colleague Phil Foden, Palmer would have been an obvious contender for PFA Player of the Year.

It was an applaudable audition and yet there is one major obstacle standing in the way of Palmer and a starting berth against Serbia; Jude Bellingham.

The Real Madrid sensation has flourished in an advanced role under Carlo Ancelotti and Southgate has taken heed, with Bellingham performing in the No.10 role on his last four England starts. Goals against Scotland and Belgium, along with a Man of the Match performance against Italy, have showcased his effectiveness for both club and country, and he is 1/20 to start the match against Serbia.

Palmer has predominantly played on the right wing for Chelsea, although Bukayo Saka has recently nailed down that position during Southgate's tenure. The Arsenal man is 1/7 to be named in the starting XI on June 16.

Competition for forward places is intense and Southgate is inundated with luxurious collection of attack-minded talent.

If Palmer is to shine again in the final warm-up act against Iceland, there's every chance he will be knocking on the door of the England manager with the view to starting in Gelsenkirchen.
