Manchester United are set to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea for a reported £55m with another £5m in add-ons.
After recording double figures for both assists and goals last season, Mount established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking midfielders, further solidifying his place in Gareth’s Southgate’s England plans.
Thomas Tuchel even compared him with Europe’s elite, and spoke in glowing terms of the then-22-year-old, praising not just his talent and ability, but his attitude and mentality, weeks before laying on the crucial assist in the 2021 Champions League final.
But there’s no denying the 24-year-old’s form has dipped over the last 12 months, losing his place in the England starting XI, and registering just five combined goals and assists for the season.
With Mount’s contract due to expire next season, the Blues have cashed in. Reports that Mount held positive talks with owner Todd Boehly saw money come in for the Chelsea man to stay in London, but they presumably didn't go anywhere, with an exit now imminent.
Manchester United were backed in to 1/5 following suggestions that Old Trafford would be Mount's preferred destination, though the Red Devils had two bids rejected for Mount.
Reports last year suggested Erik ten Hag was monitoring Mount and his contract situation, though it appeared the Red Devils had bigger transfer priorities, making it unlikely Mount would be too high on the list.
But Mount's versatility could be useful of Ten Hag who struggled with a thin squad as last season reached its climax. While Mount is most at home as a number 10, he could be a rotation option for the omnipresent Bruno Fernandes, as well as filling in on either wing or in a deeper role.
Market settled on the club that the player will be eligible to play for on 3rd September 2023.
Loan deals count for this purpose, unless a player moves to a new club and is immediately loaned out, in which case we will settle on the club that has permanently signed the player.
