Chris Eubank Jr called before BBBofC to explain prohibited sauna use ahead of Conor Benn showdown

Chris Eubank Jr is scheduled to appear before the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) next month to address allegations regarding his use of a sauna during his weight cut for his blockbuster April showdown with Conor Benn.

The 35-year-old edged to an enthralling points success over his long-term adversary at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a fight that was marked by significant weight discrepancies and a rehydration clause.

Despite Eubank Jr being fined £375,000 for missing weight, the BOXXER star remained within the agreed 10lbs rehydration limit on the morning of the fight, meaning he was exempt from any additional fines.

However, speaking to the BBC, Robert Smith, General Secretary of the BBBofC, confirmed that the board is investigating Eubank Jr's prohibited sauna use.

"We need to establish exactly what the situation is - I want to find out the dates when it was all done.

He's been called in by the Southern Area Council. He will come in at the beginning of July and tell them what the truth is and then they'll make a decision.

The use of saunas is prohibited by the BBBofC, as demonstrated by the recent removal of Adam Azim's opponent, Eliot Chavez, from their fight after Chavez used a sauna to make weight.

Eubank Jr himself posted videos online documenting what appeared to be a challenging weight cut down to middleweight (11st 6lb).

Smith added: "Let's just see what the man has to say. There will be doctors there etc and the council will consider it and decide what action they need to take."

Amidst scrutiny regarding the British Boxing Board of Control's sanctioning of the fight, together with Eubank Jr's subsequent claims that his weight cut was intentionally 'derailed', Smith suggested to Boxing News that the fighter fought displaying no obvious issues.

"He was as strong in the last round as he was in the first round," he added. "The medical documentation we received after the contest says he was fine."

The BOXXER star was reportedly hospitalised for at least two days following the gruelling clash, adding further insult to injury having accumulated £475,000 in penalties, including a £100,000 fine for slapping Benn with an egg.

The weight-related fine was paid to Benn directly to Benn, as agreed within their fight contract.
