Though Chinese football has been organised within a league system since 1951, it wasn't until 1994 that China had a professional league - the Jia-A League.
The Jia-A League lasted until 2004, when it was replaced by the Chinese Super League, which was only founded with 12 teams. In 2009, the league was completed with 16 clubs - the number still used today.
Nine teams have won the Chinese Super League since its inception, with Shanghai Port, Shandong Taishan and Guangzhou Evergrande the only multiple winners.
Guangzhou are the most successful club in Chinese Super League history with eight titles.
