Chinese Grand Prix Tips, Predictions & Odds

Red Bull bounced back to form after their Melbourne disaster with a 1-2 finish in Japan last time and they will be looking to press the advantage in this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix.

It is the first time Formula 1 has visited China since 2019, meaning the teams have very little data on the track which will be of any use to them.

The 2024-spec cars are completely different to those that raced five years ago, so although this is the 17th race at Shanghai International, it might as well be a brand new circuit.

The track itself, built on swampland, is likely to have changed too since F1 last raced there.

Another curveball is that this is the first of the six Sprint weekends taking place this year, so the teams will have just one 60-minute practice session to prepare the cars before sprint qualifying takes place on Friday.

Chinese Grand Prix tips

Fernando Alonso top-six finish @ 13/8
Nico Hulkenberg points finish @ 2/1
Two race leaders @ 7/4

Setting the scene…

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez gave Red Bull their third 1-2 finish of the season in Japan last time, demonstrating that their Australian experience was a blip rather than a sign that their dominance is slipping.

Verstappen had a brake stuck on from the start in Melbourne, which exploded on the second lap, while Perez struggled all weekend and finished fifth.

But while normal service resumed at Suzuka, Ferrari's Carlos Sainz finished only eight seconds behind Perez, suggesting that the pack are slowly inching closer to the champions.

Fernando Alonso top-six finish @ 13/8

Fernando Alonso has signed an extension to his Aston Martin contract and can celebrate the deal by crossing the line in the top six for the fourth race in a row.

The Spanish veteran was fifth in Saudi Arabia and sixth in Japan, while he also crossed the finish line sixth in Australia but was subsequently demoted to eighth following a time penalty.

At this point last year Alonso already had three podiums to his name, but Aston Martin were helped then by the disastrous starts to the season suffered by McLaren and Mercedes.

Those two have started more brightly this term, although Aston are firmly in the hunt for third place in the constructors' championship based on early evidence.

McLaren could struggle in Shanghai, where the four very tight corners are likely to expose their weaknesses.

Alonso has qualified in the top six three times already this season, and the price looks too big that he is able to grab at least eight points on Sunday.

Nico Hulkenberg points finish @ 2/1

Haas are the only team in the lower half of the championship to have seen both their drivers score points this season and Nico Hulkenberg looks a bet to add more to the American-owned team's tally.

The Banbury-based outfit finished last in the 2023 standings but have created an improved challenger for this year, finishing in the middle of the pack in every race under new team boss Ayao Komatsu.

Hulkenberg just missed out on a point in Japan last time, moving up to 11th in the final laps, but he had finished ninth and tenth in the previous two races, while team-mate Kevin Magnussen also picked up a point in Australia.

Two race leaders @ 7/4

Verstappen scored a record-equaling fifth career Grand Chelem in the season opener in Bahrain, starting from pole position, leading every lap to win the race and setting the fastest lap too.

However, he has not managed to have his nose in front at the end of every lap of a race since then, and China could go a similar way.

Lando Norris's long first stint in Saudi Arabia saw him lead a few laps at Jeddah before his first pitstop, while Sainz inherited Verstappen's lead in Australia and held it to the end.

Last time out in Japan both Sainz and his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc made brief cameos at the top of the lap chart.

We are likely to see a variety of strategies employed on Sunday given the large number of unknown quantities this weekend, which is probably why three or more leaders is favourite in this market, but two race leaders looks the call at the prices.
