Chennai Super Kings 5/1 to win the Indian Premier League

We have priced up defending champions Chennai Super Kings at 5/1 to successfully retain their trophy in the 2024 Indian Premier League.

After finishing second during the league stage of the IPL last season, Chennai Super Kings progressed to the final by beating Gujarat Titans in the first qualifier, before eventually meeting the same opponents in the final.

It was Stephen Fleming's side who prevailed again as they won by five wickets via the DLS method on the reserve day, after the initial day for the final was a wash out.

After reaching a revised target of 171 from 15 overs, Chennai equalled Mumbai Indians' record for the most IPL trophies with five, after previous victories in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021.

Led again by the formidable MS Dhoni, the Super Kings are unsurprisingly amongst the favourites in 2024 due to the depth and quality in their squad.

New Zealand opener Devon Conway was the third highest run-scorer in the 2023 season with 672 runs, which included six half-centuries, and he has been retained as an overseas player this time around.

India international batsmen Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane are also on the retained list, along with off-spinners Moeen Ali and Mitchell Santner, who are also more than handy operators with the bat.

Seam duo Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande took a combined 40 wickets in the last campaign and along with world-class all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, they will lead the charge again in 2024.

As well as keeping hold of a number of their best players from last season, Chennai also made several shrewd acquisitions at the IPL auction.

New Zealand batsman Rachin Ravindra had a fantastic 50-over World Cup and he is ready for his first foray into IPL cricket. He will be joined by compatriot Daryl Mitchell, who previously had a spell at Rajasthan Royals in 2022.

India bowler Shardul Thakur has also arrived from Kolkata Knight Riders, whilst fellow paceman Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh will add even more depth.
