13:45 Cheltenham - Hyland @ 5/2
16:00 Cheltenham - Balhambar @ 4/1
13:10 Cheltenham - Double Powerful @ 5/1
Day one of Cheltenham’s November meeting isn’t short on quality with three Pattern races on the card with the Grade 2 Shloer headlining Friday.
The action kicks off with a 20-runner handicap and it’s hard to get away from the claims of Double Powerful who bids for a remarkable six-timer.
He’s won all three of his starts this season by wide margins, bolting up in a competitive looking handicap hurdle at Kelso on his return to action before similarly impressive victories at Worcester and Fontwell.
There’s no doubt that this is a tougher assignment but there were no signs that connections had found the ceiling of his ability at Fontwell last week despite a stone rise in the weights.
This time, he has to carry a 7lb penalty but the handicapper will be putting him up 11lb when he has his say, so he’s 4lb well in here and we know that he’ll act on the ground, which is a question a few of his rivals have to answer.
He’s vying for favouritism at the time of writing but there’s an argument to say he should be even shorter in the betting given his profile and provided he acts at this venue, he could be hard to stop.
13:45 Cheltenham - Hyland @ 5/2
There are a few nice types in the Listed novices’ chase on the card, arguably none more so than Hyland for Seven Barrows.
He progressed nicely over fences throughout last season and he took a major step forward when returning from a four month break at the Showcase meeting here in October, winning a small field contest by 15 lengths.
Good ground seems to be the key to this son of Turgeon and with conditions in his favour again over this same course and distance, he ought to go well in receipt of 2lb from his main rival, Springwell Bay.
16:00 Cheltenham - Balhambar @ 4/1
The final race on the card looks like a good betting heat and one that may have been underestimated is Balhambar.
He was on a steep upward trajectory towards the end of last season for his new connections, winning back-to-back handicap hurdles in the spring and he’s been tuned up for this with a run on the Flat at Newbury last month when running with credit.
He’s going to need a career best to land this but his talented young trainer was only scratching the surface with him last term and he could be better than a mark of 117.
