Cheltenham Festival Highlights:
Day Four
Day Three
Day Two
Day One
After so many favourites hosed up over the first three days, there was only one in the winners' enclosure and, of course, it was Galopin Des Champs, who became just the eighth horse in history to win consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups, while Paul Townend wrote his name next to Pat Taaffe as the only jockeys to win horse racing's Blue Riband four times.
It seemed a matter of time before Willie Mullins reached 100 Festival winners, a landmark he reached on Wednesday before blanking on Thursday, but he was back with a bang on Gold Cup Day. Majborough took the Triumph Hurdle with Stellar Story winning the Albert Bartlett before seeing Townend hardly break sweat aboard Galopin Des Champs.
1.30 | JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1) 1st - Majborough - 6/1
| |
2.10 | County Handicap Hurdle 1 - Absurde - 12/1
| |
2.50 | Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle (Grade 1) 1 - Stellar Story - 33/1
| |
3.30 | Cheltenham Gold Cup (Grade 1) 1 - Galopin Des Champs - 10/11f
| |
4.10 | St. James's Place Festival Challenge Cup Open Hunters' Chase 1 - Sine Nomine - 8/1
4.50 | Mares' Chase (Grade 2) 1 - Limerick Lace - 3/1
5.30 | Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle 1 - Better Days Ahead – 5/1
|
Another thrilling finale as Better Days Ahead wins the Martin Pipe!
Waterford Whispers looked the clear favourite after clearing the last, but Better Days Ahead gets up excellently to take the final race of the week for Gordon Elliott.
Result:
1 - Better Days Ahead – 5/1
2 - Waterford Whispers – 10/3
3 - Quai De Bourbon – 4/1
4 - Answer To Kayf – 10/1
5 - Ocastle Des Mottes – 7/1
With the curtain set to come down on the 2024 Cheltenham Festival, we've got the final race of the week - the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockey's Handicap Hurdle, with Waterford Whispers receiving plenty of support throughout the week, backed into 3/1f.
Willie Mullins looks for one more winner with Quai De Bourbon at 9/2.
Dinoblue and Allegory De Vassy both hung around at the back of the field throughout the first circuit before being moved through the pack, while Limerick Lace was perfectly poised throughout. Two huge leaps over the final two fences from the winner were enough to just about keep Dinoblue at bay who stayed on well, but was no match for Gavin Cromwell's Limerick Lace.
Result:
1 - Limerick Lace - 3/1
2 - Dinoblue - 15/8f
3 - Marsh Wren - 28/1
4 - Allegorie De Vassy - 5/2
A competitive-looking Mares' Chase is up next, with Dinoblue (13/8), Limerick Lace (5/2) and Allegorie De Vassy (3/1) vying for favouritism.
Dinoblue is yet to win at the Festival, finishing ninth in the Mares' Novices' Hurdle in 2022 and second in the 2023 Grand Annual, while Allegorie De Vassy was a beaten favourite in last year's Mares' Chase.
What a finish!! Its On The Line was shaken up halfway round but looked to have enough over the last until a remarkable bolt up the hill from Sine Nomine to win by three-quarters of a length on the line.
Ferns Lock led most of the way round but faded badly approaching the last, while Time Leader secures a place at 50/1 for Hannah Roach.
Result:
1 - Sine Nomine - 8/1
2 - Its On The Line - 11/8f
3 - Time Leader - 50/1
4 - D'jango - 66/1
St James's Place Festival Challenge Cup is up next and it looks to be a two-horse race between Its On The Line (11/8) and Ferns Lock (10/3) in the 3m2f Chase.
Meanwhile, Galopin Des Champs is 5/2 to match Best Mate's three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups next year...
An outstanding performance from Galopin Des Champs and Paul Townend, who equals Pat Taaffe's four Gold Cup wins.
Hampered slightly by the loose Fastorslow who unseated JJ Slevin, Galopin Des Champs took a huge leap over the final fence to stride clear of Gerri Colombe, with Grand National winner Corach Rambler emerging from the back of the field to take a place.
Result:
1 - Galopin Des Champs - 10/11f
2 - Gerri Colombe - 13/2
3 - Corach Rambler - 14/1
4 - L'Homme Presse - 16/1
And it looks like Galopin Des Champs is going to go off odds-on (currently 5/6), with Gerri Colombe - who was beaten by more than 20 lengths by Galopin Des Champs, remember, although the heavy ground should help matters for Gordon Elliott - second favourite at 13/2.
Fastorslow has drifted to 8/1 and it's 14/1 bar.
Will Galopin Des Champs win a second Gold Cup or is there an upset on the cards?
The Jukebox Man established a big lead early and looked to have plenty in the tank coming up the hill, but it's Stellar Story who hauls Brian Pauling's charge back to win on the line.
A thrilling finish, with Readin Tommy Wrong fading two out and Gidleigh Park also failing to find any coming up the last.
Result:
1 - Stellar Story - 33/1
2 - The Jukebox Man - 18/1
3 - Dancing City - 8/1
4 - Spread Boss Ted - 40/1
Readin Tommy Wrong is the latest favourite for Willie Mullins this week, though has drifted slightly from 2/1 to 9/4, with Harry Fry's Gidleigh Park second favourite at 5/1.
Full market for the Albert Bartlett available here
The Festival's two leading jockeys headed for the line together but it's Paul Townend who gets Absurde up to edge out Harry Skelton aboard favourite L'eau Du Sud.
Townend takes a 5-4 lead over Skelton and rides the favourite in the next two...
Result:
1 - Absurde - 12/1
2 - L'eau-Du Sud - 7/2F
3 - Pied Piper - 14/1
4 - Magical Zoe - 8/1
5 - Afadil - 40/1
We've already seen Dan Skelton land a couple of big handicap wins at this year's Festival, and if he's to have any chance of catching up to Willie Mullins he'll need a result from 3/1 favourite L'eau Du Sud, though he also saddles 15/2 shot Faivoir.
So Scottish is second favourite at 11/2 with King Of Kingsfield 6/1.
Meanwhile Majborough has been priced up at 12/1 for next year's Arkle and 12/1 for next year's Turners Novices' Chase.
Paul Townend opted to ride Storm Heart, but it's Majborough who brings Willie Mullins to 101 Festival winners.
In the JP McManus colours, Mark Walsh took the final flight with Kargese, pulling clear to win by a length and a half ahead of Salver and Nurburgring, with Storm Heart finishing outside of the places.
Result:
1st - Majborough - 6/1
2nd - Kargese - 4/1
3rd - Salver - 10/1
4th - Nurburgring - 6/1
Nicky Henderson's nightmare week endured another blow with the removal of Sir Gino from Friday's curtain-raiser, paving the way for Willie Mullins to add to his 100 Cheltenham Festival winners.
He has Storm Heart, Kargese, Bunting and Majborough - the first four in the betting - as well as three more at double-figure prices.
See the full JCB Triumph Hurdle market - including our Friday Super Boost - here
He might have drawn a blank on Wednesday, but Willie Mullins is sure to return to the winners' enclosure at some point on Friday, saddling the favourite in four races, including three of the first four.
We've put together a four-fold of Mullins' best hopes on Friday, paying out at around 75/1

Only Arkle, L'Escargot, Best Mate and Al Boum Photo have won back-to-back Gold Cups in the last 60 years, and it's an illustrious list that Galopin Des Champs is looking to join today.
Going off at 7/5F last year, Willie Mullins' charge may well go off odds-on this time around, where he could become the first odds-on winner of the Gold Cup since Best Mate in 2004.
Gerri Colombe is in to second favourite at 13/2 but will have to overturn a 23-length defeat in the Leopardstown Savills Chase over Christmas, while third favourite Fastorslow - who's twice beaten Galopin Des Champs since last year's Gold Cup win - will need to overturn a four-and-a-half-length defeat in his last outing at the Irish Gold Cup.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the feature race on day four of the Festival.
Gold Cup Day - Friday 15th March
13.30: JCB Triumph Hurdle
14.10: County Handicap Hurdle
14.50: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle
15.30: Cheltenham Gold Cup
16.10: St James’s Place Festival Challenge Cup
16.50: Mares’ Chase
17.30: Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle
As expected, Sir Gino has been withdrawn from the JCB Triumph Hurdle, paving the way for a 101st Festival winner for Willie Mullins who drew a blank on Wednesday.
He saddles joint-favourites Majborough and Storm Heart as he bids to pulls clear of a resurgent Dan Skelton, who's still fighting for a first Top Trainer crown.
The Irish will again be taking the Prestbury Cup, but can Skelton (four winners) prevent Mullins (six winners) from winning Top Trainer for a record-extending 11th time?
The race for Top Jockey is even closer, with Paul Townend and Harry Skelton locked at four each, and Skelton is aboard favourite Leau Du Sud in the County Handicap Hurdle.
As always, we'll have the latest news, tips and odds via our live blog.
Latest Cheltenham Festival betting odds
If Wednesday was a sensational day in the eyes of Dan Skelton, then Thursday was out of this world.
Recent years have marked a distinct lack of Festival success for British-trained runners, but Skelton is doing his level best to buck the trend, supplementing a day two double with Grade One glory courtesy of Grey Dawning in the Turners Novices’ Chase and Protektorat in the Ryanair Chase.
Grey Dawning was impressive as it resisted Ginny Destiny's charge to land the opener before Protektorat proved too strong for defending champion Envoi Allen in the Ryanair.
Many were critical of Gordon Elliott's decision to not run Teahupoo after his Hatton's Grace triumph in December but the decision was justified with a sensational performance in the Stayers' Hurdle.
Jack Kennedy bided his time with Teahupoo and the seven-year-old sprinted clear of Flooring Porter on the home stretch, giving Elliott his first winner at this year's Festival.
If you were following any of Sir Alex Ferguson or Harry Redknapp's runners, then you were in luck.
25/1 shot Monmiral, who is part-owned by former Manchester United chief Ferguson, finished emphatically to take the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle before Protektorat romped to Ryanair Chase victory in the following race.
Then it was Redknapp's turn for his first Cheltenham Festival success as Shakem Up'arry landed the TrustATrader Plate.
1.30 | Turners Novices' Chase
2.10 | Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle
2.50 | Ryanair Chase | |
3.30 | Stayers' Hurdle | |
4.10 | TrustATrader Plate
4.50 | Mares' Novices' Hurdle
5.30 | Kim Muir Challenge Cup |
Two more winners for Harry Skelton draws him level with Paul Townend at the top of the standings on four for the Festival.
It will be an almighty shock if Townend doesn't convert at least one of his five rides into a winner on Friday, especially when two of his entries are Readin Tommy Wrong and Galopin Des Champs, who are favourites for the Albert Bartlett and Gold Cup respectively.
Skelton only has one entry tomorrow and that's with L'eau Du Sud in the County Hurdle, who is joint-favourite alongside King of Kingsfield.

The Mares' Novices' Hurdle is the penultimate race on day three and Gordon Elliott's Brighterdaysahead is at the top of the betting.
An unbeaten five from five, with two bumper wins and three victories over hurdles, Brighterdaysahead looked better than ever when landing a Listed event at Navan last month.
She now faces another unbeaten mare in Jade De Grugy, who hails from the dominant Willie Mullins yard and is 7/4 to secure the 67-year-old his sixth victory in this race.

Dan Skelton is leading the British charge on day three of the Festival - and ruining the plans for Irish domination on St Patrick's Thursday.
With Grey Dawning leading a 1-2-3 in the Turners, Monmiral headed a 1-2-3-4-5-6 in the Pertemps before Protektorat sealed Britain's first win in the Ryanair since Frodon in 2019.

What a finish from Monmiral! It's a first win of the week for Paul Nicholls and Sir Alex Ferguson, although winning jockey Harry Cobden is astounded.
"I can't believe that this horse has just won that," Cobden told ITV Racing. "I thought he should've been 125-1! I was meant to be in the first eight and I thought they were going far too fast. I followed Harry round and he's come on really well. It's so much more competitive but I'm delighted to have this one."

We're three from three with our Super Boosts this week after Grey Dawning landed the Turners Novices' Chase.
Our final Cheltenham Festival Super Boost will be live on site at 10am on Friday.
Cheltenham Festival Super Boost Terms & Conditions
Victory for Grey Dawning means Dan Skelton has won three of the last five races at Cheltenham, after the success of Langer Dan and Unexpected Party on Wednesday.
It takes his tally of Festival winners to 10 and represents his best week in the Cotswolds.
Skelton said: “It’s magic! Thank you Cheltenham! These people make it special, he was great today. Dan got the right race.
“Everything went just perfect. Absolutely pinged the last two!”
We've priced up Grey Dawning at 12/1 to win the 2025 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Shark Hanlon has revealed that Hewick will not run in Friday's Gold Cup due to the ground.
The King George VI Chase winner was a 14/1 chance for the prestigious steeplechase, having fell at the second-last fence in the race last year when well in contention.
Galopin Des Champs remains the favourite to successfully defend his Gold Cup crown at Evens, with Fastorslow next best in the betting at 4/1.

Along with the Ryanair Chase, the Stayers' Hurdle headlines Thursday's racing at the Cheltenham Festival and Teahupoo is the 13/8 favourite, having finished third in 2023.
Gordon Elliott’s star started favourite for last year’s race only to come up short behind his 33/1 stable companion Sire Du Berlais, who is 9/1 to retain his crown under Mark Walsh.
Ran only once this season - which resulted in another Hatton’s Grace victory at Fairyhouse in December - Teahupoo has been wrapped up in preparation for another crack at the Stayers crown.
Other contenders include 2022 Grand National winner Noble Yeats, two-time Cheltenham winner Sir Gerhard and a Grade One victor in Crambo. Flooring Porter, Paisley Park and Home By The Lee will also be vying for glory in a hotly-contested race.

Henderson said on X: "Both horses appear to be in great shape but we cannot ignore the performance of all our horses.
"We are very much looking forward to hopefully Aintree and Punchestown as soon as we get the team back to normal."

Ballyburn made impressively light work of the Gallagher Novices' Hurdle on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival.
The 1/2 favourite - who we SUPER BOOSTED to Evens - was one of five runners for the all-conquering Willie Mullins and travelled strongly behind the leaders under Paul Townend.
When the field rounded the final bend there was no question whatsoever as to the outcome, with the six-year-old strolling away from the pack to win by 13 lengths.
Fact To File powered clear impressively in the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase to strengthen his credentials as a future Gold Cup contender.
The 8/13 favourite was given a patient ride by Mark Walsh through the early stages and the field was almost inseparable over the third-last fence.
But Fact To File showed his class and accelerated away from the foiling pack to give Willie Mullins his sixth winner in the race.
It looked set to be a day for the favourites until a mishap from El Fabiolo saw the 2/9 shot pulled up in the Champion Chase.
It opened the door for Captain Guinness, who came to the fore after Edwardstone fell at the second last and Rachael Blackmore used all her talent to guide the nine-year-old to victory.

Looking for a pick in the Coral Cup? Robbie Wilders of the Racing Post has backed GUARD YOUR DREAMS as his NAP for the Festival.
On his pick, Wilders said: "Guard Your Dreams' profile tells you he is a Cheltenham horse - he was seventh in the Coral Cup as a novice before improving to land the International Hurdle nine months later, a fair feat for a five-year-old."
Guard Your Dreams is 22/1 to land the Coral Cup.

Ballyburn makes it look easy in the Gallagher Novices' Hurdle!
Pulling clear after the penultimate hurdle, Ballyburn shows his class to win comfortably for Willie Mullins.
Result:

2. Jimmy Du Seuil - 66/1
3. Ile Atlantique - 9/2

After weeks of uncertainty on which race he would run in, Ballyburn is the 1/2 favourite to take victory in the Gallagher Novices' Hurdle.
Beaten by Firefox on his hurdling debut at Fairyhouse in December, Ballyburn subsequently bolted up over two-and-a-half miles at Leopardstown before successfully reverting to two miles to strike Grade One gold at last month’s Dublin Racing Festival.
The six-year-old had headed the antepost market for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle before Willie Mullins clarified his plans for Ballyburn last week.
He will face six rivals in Wednesday's opener, including stablemate Ile Atlantique.

Broadway Boy, who had been a 10/1 shot for Wednesday’s Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, has been ruled out of the Cheltenham Festival.

El Fabiolo dominates the market for the Champion Chase at 3/10 but Edwardstone's trainer Alan King believes his 2022 Arkle winner has the advantage over fences.
Edwardstone returned to winning ways after a six-race losing streak at Newbury last time out, when the switch to front-running tactics rejuvenated the ten-year-old and he romped 40 lengths clear of the pack in the Grade Two Game Spirit Chase.
His performance, which was rated just 1lb lower on Racing Post Ratings than his best performance when landing the 2022 Tingle Creek, suggests he's entering the Festival in good form and Edwardstone is 13/2 to land the Champion Chase.

Nicky Henderson has confirmed that Jonbon will not run in Wednesday's Champion Chase following concerns over the welfare of his horses.
In a statement on X, Henderson said: "I'm afraid we have had to make some very tough decisions following the very disappointing performances of all bar one of our horses yesterday. It was there for all to see that there is obviously something affecting nearly all of our horses and consequently we have reluctantly decided that Jonbon, First Street and Kingston Pride will not run today."

Rachael Blackmore ensured the 2024 Cheltenham Festival got off to an emphatic start as she produced a wonderful ride onboard Slade Steel in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle.
As the rain continued to fall and conditions on the ground deteriorated, Blackmore held Slade Steel on the outside before making her move on the final stretch, powering away from the favourite Mystical Power.
State Man took full advantage of Constitution Hill's absence and lived up to his billing with another assured performance to land the Champion Hurdle.
Irish Point produced a brave showing but Willie Mullins' star was comfortable throughout and quickened on the home straight to pull clear of his rival.
There were question marks over whether Lossiemouth had the stamina to prevail over two-and-a-half miles but she swatted away her doubters with a dazzling performance.
Keeping in touch with the leading pack, Lossiemouth moved through the gears and the mare sprinted into the distance, rewarding Willie Mullins and Paul Townend with their third winner of the day.

The Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle is the penultimate race on day one of the Cheltenham Festival and Racing Post tipster Keith Melrose is backing the 10/3 favourite Milan Tino to come out on top.
"French form is important to the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle," Melrose stated. "Many of those who go well in this race started their careers in France, where young horses are generally sent over hurdles earlier.
"Milan Tino is a step further down that path than most. He has good juvenile form in France, having placed in Grade 2 company, and remains with his French yard."

Willie Mullins waxed lyrical about Lossiemouth after another splendid performance, saying: "She's a Champion Hurdle mare. The way she jumps, she's got everything."
Paul Townend was also effusive in his praise, adding: “She’s brilliant. They’ve been patient with her and it paid off. There was a question mark about her stamina but I never doubted it.”
After her Mares' Hurdle triumph, Lossiemouth is 5/1 to win the 2025 Champion Hurdle.

She was a Festival winner when landing the Triumph Hurdle last year and conquered Love Envoi in January, who is one of her 10 rivals.
On Lossiemouth's prospects, Willie Mullins said: “The race is two and a half miles, so we have to step up to that. I wouldn’t have any worries about it, Triumph Hurdle winners are normally stayers.”

Harry Fry has confirmed that Love Envoi will retire after today's Mares' Hurdle.
The eight-year-old, who will be ridden by Johnny Burke, is 9/1 to triumph in the Mares' Hurdle, a race in which she finished second behind Honeysuckle last year following her breakthrough festival success in the Mares' Novices' Hurdle in 2022.
Love Envoi has won eight of her 13 races and finished second in two Grade One appearances, the last in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Sandown in December 2023.
Today's Mares' Hurdle will see Love Envoi reacquainted with Lossiemouth, who she was beaten by at Cheltenham's January meeting in the Grade Two International Hurdle.

With two hours to go until we hear the Cheltenham roar, we've delved into the archives to pick out five of the greatest races at the Cheltenham Festival.
2008 Gold Cup: Denman v Kauto Star
Very few Cheltenham Festival races have generated the sort of build-up that the 2008 Gold Cup managed to do.
Paul Nicholls was the top trainer around at the time and, in his care, he had the two best staying chasers of the day – Kauto Star and Denman, who lived side-by-side in adjacent boxes at his Ditcheat yard.
Ruby Walsh was on board Kauto Star, the reigning champion and favourite, but Sam Thomas and Denman produced an unmerciful display of front-running power to bludgeon the finishing burst of 'King Kauto', as 'The Tank' prevailed after pouring on the pressure for a full circuit of Cheltenham.

Such is the might of the 'Mullins Machine' nowadays that the Top Trainer award is almost viewed as a formality for the Closutton maestro.
Given Mullins is 1/12 to finish as Top Trainer, and to give a further idea of his strength in depth, the 67-year-old is 4/5 to win more races than every British trainer combined across the four days – for those pondering, it is 2/1 Great Britain in the same market and 11/2 the tie.
With the likes of Ballyburn, State Man, Lossiemouth, El Fabiolo, Fact To File, Galopin Des Champs and Dinoblue all odds-on at the time of writing for their principle targets, it could be quite the year for Mullins' Cheltenham Runners. There's every chance he will finish the week with a century of Festival winners.
Gordon Elliott is the favourite in the Top Trainer Without Willie Mullins market at 4/9, followed by Nicky Henderson at 7/2.

The absence of Constitution Hill is a disappointment for all racegoers but it won't be of much concern for State Man, who has a gilt-edged opportunity to claim the Champion Hurdle crown.
One of the most consistent hurdlers of recent seasons, the only blemish on his record is when finishing runner-up to Constitution Hill in this race last year; opposing any other horse, State Man would have won at a canter.
The seven-year-old is 1/3 favourite to give Willie Mullins a fifth Champion Hurdle triumph following the previous victories of dual winner Hurricane Fly, Faugheen and Annie Power.

A field of 10 have been declared for the opening race of the Festival and it's the Willie Mullins duo of Tullyhill and Mystical Power that lead the betting.
Mullins, who is a seven-time winner of the race, is looking for his first success since Appreciate It reigned supreme back in 2021.
They face stern competition from Slade Steel, with Rachael Blackmore talking up his chances for the curtain raiser.
“Obviously this is a very good race, it’s a Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and it’s very competitive, but I think that he is bang there with his chance," said Blackmore.
“He’s a horse we’ve always held in high regard and soft ground won’t be an issue for him. We’re hoping for a big run.”

The Mares' Hurdle delivered a classic in 2023 as Honeysuckle delivered a fairytale ending to her career by grinding out her fourth Cheltenham Festival success.
All eyes this year are on Lossiemouth. After her dominant performance in the Triumph Hurdle last year, the five-year-old mare is as short as 8/13 to reign triumphant for a second time in the Cotswolds.
She takes on a longer trip in this race, a factor that has even concerned her owner Rich Ricci, and faces competition from 10 rivals, including the Mullins-trained trio of Ashroe Diamond, Echoes In Rain and Gala Marceau.
Harry Fry's Love Envoi and Marie's Rock head the betting for the British contingent.

State Man will face seven rivals and is the overwhelming 1/3 favourite to win the Champion Hurdle on Tuesday.
Last year's runner-up will be joined by a fellow Mullins runner in the form of Zarak The Brave, while Gordon Elliott’s Irish Point and Lorna Fowler’s Colonel Mustard also represent Ireland.
Constitution Hill’s trainer Nicky Henderson will be relying on the supplemented Betfair Hurdle winner Iberico Lord and talented mare Luccia, with Hughie Morrison’s admirable veteran Not So Sleepy and Nemean Lion from Kerry Lee’s yard completing the line-up.
