Cheltenham Day 4 Tips including Friday's Gold Cup

It's the biggest race of them all on the last day at Cheltenham as the Gold Cup takes centre stage and Graeme Rodway from the Racing Post has picked out his three best bets.

4.10 St. James's Place Festival Challenge Cup - It's On The Line @

Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle tip

Dancing City @ 6/1

Willie Mullins and Paul Townend have predictably swept all before them this week and they are responsible for another favourite here in Readin Tommy Wrong. However, this time Townend might not be on the right one because DANCING CITY has an outstanding chance in the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle (2.50).

Danny Mullins comes in for the ride on Dancing City and he showed how good he is on the big occasion when winning the first three races at the Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown on supposed second strings, often leaving Townend trailing in his wake.

Dancing City was one of those winners, making virtually all the running to win a Grade 1 over 2m6½f in a good time and producing a big improved Racing Post Rating as a result.

He showed a good attitude on that occasion and stayed on strongly, shaping like he will be well suited by a step up in trip at this stiff track. With improvement expected, he can go well.

Cheltenham Gold Cup tip

L'Homme Presse @ 12/1

Galopin Des Champs is a short price to cap a near-perfect week for Mullins and Townend by winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup (3.30) for a second year in a row and he will be difficult to beat if he shows his best form, but this is a stronger race than the one he landed last year.

It's worth taking on the favourite with an each-way bet on L'HOMME PRESSE, who has looked like a Gold Cup horse since he ran away with the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase at the course two years ago and he appears to have returned from a lengthy absence this season at the top of his form.

L'Homme Presse made short work of the smart stayer Protektorat, winner of the Ryanair Chase here on Thursday, in his seasonal reappearance at Lingfield in January and that was his first start since December 2022.

He was unable to build on that when dropped to 2m5f for the Ascot Chase last time, but he simply didn't have the pace to compete and caught the eye, keeping on late. It wasn't a bad trial for this race and it should have brought him on again as it was his second outing back.

The step up to 3m2½f and return to this track will definitely suit L'Homme Presse and he could bounce back.

St. James's Place Festival Challenge Cup tip

It's On The Line @ 2/1

The St. James's Place Festival Challenge Cup (4.10) is the amateur riders' equivalent of the Gold Cup and the one to back is last year's runner-up IT'S ON THE LINE, who goes for in-form Emmet Mullins.

He was bidding to become the first six-year-old to win the race since Kingscliff in 2003 here last year and put in a cracking effort when running on from the back for second behind Premier Magic. He has improved again this season and comes here unbeaten in three starts.

It's On The Line has the beating of both of his major rivals here as he had Ferns Lock in behind when successful at Down Royal in December and then produced an even better performance to beat Billaway by a head in a well-run hunter chase at Naas last time.

The cheekpieces that he wore last year return for the first time since and he appears to be progressing quickly enough to give owner JP McManus another winner of this famous hunter chase.
