The Blues have it all to do at Stamford Bridge after they failed to make their dominance count in the reverse fixture in Germany last month.
Despite launching 21 efforts at goal, Graham Potter’s men were made to pay for their wasteful finishing as Karim Adeyemi notched the only goal of the game to put the Bundesliga side in the driving seat ahead of the London leg.
It was a night that typified Chelsea under the stewardship of the former Brighton boss, who is under increasing pressure to start delivering the goods following the club’s mammoth January transfer window outlay.
With the club already out of the FA Cup and 11 points adrift of the top four in the Premier League, success in the Champions League represents their only hope of salvaging what has been a disastrous season for the Londoners.
They head into the crucial clash as the odds-on 8/11 favourites to secure victory on the night, but they will have to do something they haven’t done since December if they are to seal progression within regular time… score twice!
The last time they netted more than one in a game was in a 2-0 success over Bournemouth almost three months ago, with the Blues remarkably scoring just five times in all competitions in the 12 games since.
It highlights the frailties of a side that, on paper, look blessed by an almost embarrassment of riches in the attacking areas.
Boasting players of the ilk of Joao Felix, Christian Pulisic, Mykhailo Mudryk, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz, who is 6/1 to score first, you’d think that it’s only a matter of time until things begin to click into gear in SW10, and maybe, just maybe, tonight is that night.
Potter knows he has to get a tune out of his side if they are to turn the tie on its head, especially given the fact that Dortmund arrive in the English capital riding the crest of a wave having recorded 10 successive victories.
They are the most in-form team across the continent, and whilst they are 7/2 outsiders to make it 11 on the bounce, they will quietly fancy their chances of securing themselves a spot in the last eight of the showpiece European competition.
Their first-leg hero Adeyemi is absent however, after sustaining an injury a few days after his goalscoring exploits at Signal Iduna Park, although Chelsea will also be hindered by the absence of influential defender Thiago Silva and England international Mason Mount – with the pair remaining sidelined.
There’s no doubt that this is a fixture of significant importance to those of a Chelsea persuasion… especially Potter, who has recently admitted that he has significantly underperformed since taking the Stamford Bridge managerial reins from Thomas Tuchel.
But, if his troops can replicate their February performance, and add a touch more panache to their work in the final third, then it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that the Londoners do make it successive wins for the first time since October, and, ignite life back into their campaign.
