Chelsea have reportedly approached AC Milan over the signing of French goalkeeper Mike Maignan, though an agreement is not yet close.
Robert Sanchez has come under a fair share of criticism throughout the 2024/25 campaign, and Chelsea look prepared to search the market for a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
Consistently linked with a move to the Premier League in recent years, AC Milan's Mike Maignan appears to be the name that tops the list.
Fabrizio Romano took to ‘X’ to exclusively break the news.
EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea approach AC Milan to sign Mike Maignan as new goalkeeper.
“Mike Maignan has still not signed a new contract at the club and Chelsea are now aware of the situation.
“He's always been high on (the) Chelsea list with clubs in talks – decision up to Milan.”
There is a lot of compromising yet to be done on the deal however, with the two sides not yet close on the valuation.
According to Romano: "AC Milan want around €30m. Chelsea won’t pay that as they value Maignan at €10m being out of contract in 2026."
Chelsea picked up their first piece of silverware under Enzo Maresca in the form of the Conference League just weeks ago, and they’ve wasted no time in turning their attention to the transfer window.
With the acquisition of Liam Delap all but confirmed, and Jamie Gittens, Hugo Ekitike and Jarrad Branthwaite mooted as potential incomings, Maresca’s Chelsea should be in a good position to compete in both the UEFA Champions League and Premier League next term.
Chelsea know more than anyone the importance of a top level goalkeeper in order to compete for the top honours, with Stamford Bridge having previously been home to the likes of Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois.
It seems an abundance of goalkeepers have been added to the roster in recent windows, but the club are seemingly yet to strike gold in the position.
While Sanchez has been Maresca’s go-to in the most recent term, he’s occasionally been replaced in the starting XI by Filip Jorgensen.
Maresca will be looking to put an end to any uncertainty regarding the goalkeeper role, and Maignan may just be the solution.
