The latest horse racing betting tips for Thursday's meeting at Chelmsford City from Racing Post tipster Phill Anderson.
5.35 Chelmsford City – Lewis Barnes @ 6/1
6.40 Chelmsford City – Union Island @ 3/1
7.10 Chelmsford City - Under Siege @ 2/5
5.35 Chelmsford City – Lewis Barnes @ 6/1
The action kicks off with a competitive looking apprentice handicap with 10 runners declared and a case can be made for plenty of them.
However, a good rider can be worth their weight in gold in these races and Connor Planas has given the impression that he’s a young jockey going places in the last couple of seasons.
He gets the ride on Lewis Barnes who is yet to get his head in front in 10 starts so far but has been giving the impression that his turn is around the corner this season.
The son of Bungle Inthejungle ran creditably when fifth at Beverley last month and he was then only beaten roughly a length in a Lingfield handicap nine days later when just failing to reel in the front-runner.
A subsequent run at Brighton was too bad to be true when probably not handling the unique demands of that track and he showed promise on all-weather for John Butler last term, so a return to an artificial surface could be the key to him, particularly in a weak contest which he gets here.
6.40 Chelmsford City – Union Island @ 3/1
It often pays to be positioned prominently over sprint trips at Chelmsford and one that might get a freebie on the front end is Union Island in the three-year-old handicap.
He chased home a subsequent winner in a Brighton maiden on his return to action before gaining a first success at Musselburgh last time out and he appears to be on a good mark back in a handicap, competing off just 70.
Stall five is handy enough for Joe Fanning who is a jockey that excels from the front and this son of U S Navy Flag can continue on his upward curve.
7.10 Chelmsford City - Under Siege @ 2/5
Having already achieved an official rating of 94, Under Siege could take some stopping in the first division of the mile maiden.
He chased home the subsequent Dante winner, Economics, on his debut at Newbury earlier in the season and the horse he was runner-up to second time out was a recent winner in Group 3 company at Goodwood earlier this month.
There’s no doubt that his form dipped at Windsor on his third run but he was slowly away (a trait he had not shown in his other two runs) and he was given too much to do in a slowly run contest.
It’s fair to say he has a clear form edge over his rivals on Thursday and he’s probably going to take some stopping for a yard in-form, provided that he gets away on terms.
