ChatGPT predicts the 1-2-3 for the 2026 Melbourne Cup

24 will jump for the 166th running of the world famous Melbourne Cup.

"The race that stops a nation" is by far and away Australia's most famous contest and is enjoyed by racing fans all across the globe.

Down the years, the Cup has proven tricky for punters to get a handle on, with no winning favourites across the last 12 renewals of the race.

Taking into account variables such as: track, trip, ground, trainer, jockey, form, draw, course and distance, we asked ChatGPT to predict the first three home.

ChatGPT's Melbourne Cup prediction

1st: Point Of Law

Taking home the winning share of £2.2m, according to ChatGPT, is ex-John & Thady Gosden inmate Point Of Law. Formerly owned by King Charles and Queen Camilla, he was an expensive purchase earlier in the summer and won the Geelong Cup on his first start.

ChatGPT said: "My predicted winner is Point Of Law. He is an exciting young stayer trained by Ciaron Maher, ridden by Ethan Brown, and carries just 53kg from barrier 9. His victory in the Geelong Cup was particularly impressive, demonstrating that he has both stamina and the ability to sustain a strong pace. At three years old, he has plenty of scope for improvement."

2nd: Middle Earth

Another horse formerly trained in the UK; Middle Earth is very much one for the trends. His age, weight, previous form and connections all line up with past winners of the race.

ChatGPT said: "My pick for second is Middle Earth. Another trained by Ciaron Maher, this time ridden by Mark Zahra, he starts from stall 1 carrying 56.5kg. He finished third in last year's Cup, so he clearly handles both the distance and Flemington. His recent form form isn't particularly inspiring, but he has been prepared with this race in mind. Zahra's experience in major staying races is another significant positive."

3rd: Trustyourinstinct

Joseph O'Brien has the small matter of five Cup contenders this year and ChatGPT has got one of them in the first three home. Trustyourinstinct drops into handicap company for the very first time and has four successes to his name at Listed level or better.

ChatGPT said: "My pick for third is Trustyourinstinct, trained by Joseph O'Brien and ridden by James McDonald. He carries 58kg and starts from stall 18, which is not ideal. However, his European staying form is excellent. His victory in the Curragh Cup and subsequent fourth in the Irish St Leger demonstrates his ability to handle staying distances. McDonald is a tremendous big-race jockey, and I particularly like the horse's ability to settle and produce a finishing burst."
